Brad Pitt jokes: 'I'm a drug addict' at screening

By Us Weekly

Brad Pitt still hasn't said very much about his wedding plans with Angelina Jolie. One subject he opened up about a bit more on Friday? Drugs.

"I'm Brad Pitt and I'm a drug addict," the "Killing Them Softly" star, 48, joked, laughing, at Friday's "The House We Live In" screening in Los Angeles, where he introduced filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, whose new documentary investigates the drug epidemic in the U.S.

"No, my drug days have long since passed," clarified the engaged father of six. Pitt (who announced his engagement to Jolie, 37, this past spring) has been frank about his marijuana use in the past. In a controversial Parade interview from September 2011, Pitt said the earlier phase of his superstardom (including his marriage to Jennifer Aniston) left him depressed -- and smoking pot. "I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out." Pitt told Parade.

Slamming efforts to squash the illegal drug trade in the U.S. the star said at Friday's event: "It's certainly true that I could probably land in any city, in any state, and get you whatever you wanted. I could find anything you're looking for, give me 24 hours or so. And yet we still support this, I have to say, this charade called the drug war."

The actor-humanitarian continued of the "drug war": "We've spent a trillion dollars, it's lasted, it's gone on, for over 40 years -- a lot of people have lost their lives for it. And we still talk about it like it's a success. And yet it's a flawed, a backwards system/strategy that actually perpetuates itself."

Pitt's love Jolie and their children were last spotted in the South of France (near the brood's Chateau Miraval) in September. No definitely word yet on when Jolie and Pitt tie the knot.

Japan security environment tougher than ever: PM Noda

YOKOSUKA, Japan (Reuters) - Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told his navy on Sunday that Japan's security environment was tougher than ever, underscoring tension with China over a territorial dispute and the threat of North Korea's weapons programs.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply after Japan in September bought from private owners some of the East China Sea islets that both Tokyo and Beijing claim. That sparked violent anti-Japanese protests across China and badly hurt trade.

"It is needless to say that the security environment surrounding Japan is getting tougher than ever," Noda told about 8,000 servicemen and women, mostly from the navy, from aboard the destroyer Kurama.

"We have a neighbor that launches missiles under the pretence of satellite launches. We have various developments concerning territory and sovereignty."

Noda, supreme commander of Japan's military known as the Self-Defence Forces (SDF), was speaking during a fleet review off Kanagawa prefecture, south of Tokyo.

His remarks were relayed to ships gathered in the area -- about 40 vessels, including the U.S. cruiser Shiloh, were present for the review. About 47,000 U.S. troops are based in Japan.

Noda braved occasional bouts of drizzle to review destroyers, submarines, minesweepers and fuel supply vessels that passed in front of him while SDF helicopters and P-3C anti-submarine patrol planes flew overhead.

The disputed group of islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are located near rich fishing grounds and potentially huge oil and gas reserves.

Patrol vessels from Japan and China have been keeping a wary watch on each other in the East China Sea near the islets, raising concerns that an unintended collision or other incident could develop into a broader clash.

Japan's Coast Guard had planned to send one of its patrol ships to the naval review, but it canceled the vessel's participation because the heightened tensions prompted it to allocate more ships to the area.

Japan is also wary of North Korea's nuclear and missile projects, with its territory lying within the range of Pyongyang's missiles.

North Korea has conducted three rocket tests since 2006 for what Pyongyang says are satellite launches, though Japan and Western countries suspect they are intended to test missiles. The North has also conducted two nuclear tests.

Don't Eidolons Have Anything Better to Do? | Video Games ...

Today, a steadfast bastion of the Final Fantasy realm is pilloried, tarred, feathered and mocked by the merry mocking mockster of mock that I am. We speak of summon monsters, Eidolons, Guardian Forces, or any other lofty moniker these abominations have been granted over the prolific past of the series.

These formidable entities include the quintessential firey stylings of Ifrit, a large Minotaur-esque gentleman (clad only in minute underpants that bulge disconcertingly and make us fervently wish to punch our own eyes in the face), Shiva the ice spirit, and Odin, God of stabbing crotches with humongous swords (and closet collector of My Little Pony dolls. Oh, the egregious harm that revelation would cause his masculine image! Were it not, naturellement, an outrageous falsehood).

Eidolons- Shiva

The primary utility of these celestial beings is to aid your party in battle. They are summoned, discharge a mass-ravaging attack of their element du jour, and sidle off again in a clandestine manner, leaving your opponents languishing in a blood-bleeding eviscerated mess (and, presumably, expansive urine puddle) on the pavement. They are also acclaimed for giving the White Mages of the cosmos some form of offensive ability. Bereft of these guys, the mages? piteous staff-flailing is about as physically imposing as a puppy with no legs.

Why, prithee, do they do so? These quasi-deities are largely content to watch our impotent, feeble mortal flesh-bag protagonists battle alone. They lounge in the opulence of Mount Eidolon, fed grapes by dusky maidens. Sixty-foot-tall ones too, I?d wager. One can envisage Ifrit up there in his tiny wrestler Y-fronts, Shiva clad in that raunch-tastic ice bikini of hers, pointing and laughing:
?Lo! Those paltry humans are attempting to murderize a really rather large dragon! Shall we alight to their aid with all due haste, like the almighty Gods we are??
?Nuts to that. I?m watching the game, whilst intermittently scratching my ass.?
?For shame, Ifrit! For shame! Fie upon you!?
?Very well. If you insist, I shall propel an ACTUAL MASSIVE METEORITE -which is on fire, mark you, I feel I must stress that fact- into that horrific beast?s delicate facial region.?

Able to convene such forces on a mere whim, why does the party so frequently resort to poking their foes with daggers and suchlike? It?s akin to jabbing a rhino in the posterior with a toothpick. Most pertinently, though, why can?t Eidolons serve as the harbingers of glory and hope for the planet, in lieu of meagre manfolk?
Won?t somebody think of the children?

Scientists observe quantum effects in cold chemistry

Friday, October 12, 2012

At very low temperatures, close to absolute zero, chemical reactions may proceed at a much higher rate than classical chemistry says they should ? because in this extreme chill, quantum effects enter the picture. A Weizmann Institute team has now confirmed this experimentally; their results would not only provide insight into processes in the intriguing quantum world in which particles act as waves, it might explain how chemical reactions occur in the vast frigid regions of interstellar space.

Long-standing predictions are that quantum effects should allow the formation of a transient bond ? one that will force colliding atoms and molecules to orbit each other, instead of separating after the collision. Such a state would be very important, as orbiting atoms and molecules could have multiple chances to interact chemically. In this theory, a reaction that would seem to have a very low probability of occurring would proceed very rapidly at certain energies.

Dr. Ed Narevicius and his team in the Institute's Chemical Physics Department managed, for the first time, to experimentally confirm this elusive process in a reaction they performed at chilling temperatures of just a fraction of a degree above the absolute zero ? 0.01?K. Their results appeared this week in Science.

"The problem," says Narevicius, "is that in classical chemistry, we think of reactions in terms of colliding billiard balls held together by springs on the molecular level. In the classical picture, reaction barriers block those billiard balls from approaching one another, whereas in the quantum physics world, reaction barriers can be penetrated by particles, as these acquire wave-like qualities at ultra-low temperatures."

The quest to observe quantum effects in chemical reactions started over half a century ago with pioneering experiments by Dudley Herschbach and Yuan T. Lee, who later received a Nobel Prize for their work. They succeeded in observing chemical reactions at unprecedented resolution by colliding two low-temperature, supersonic beams. However, the collisions took place at relative speeds that were much too high to resolve many quantum effects: When two fast beams collide, the relative velocity sets the collision temperature at above 100?K, much too warm for quantum effects to play a significant role. Over the years, researchers had used various ingenious techniques, including changing the angle of the beams and slowing them down to a near-halt. These managed to bring the temperatures down to around 5?K ? close, but still a miss for those seeking to observe chemical reactions in quantum conditions.

The innovation that Narevicius and his team, including Alon B. Henson, Sasha Gersten, Yuval Shagam and Julia Narevicius, introduced was to merge the beams rather than collide them. One beam was produced in a straight line, and the second beam was bent using a magnetic device until it was parallel with the first. Even though the beams were racing at high-speed, the relative speed of the particles in relation to the others was zero. Thus a much lower collision temperature of only 0.01 K could be achieved. One beam contained helium atoms in an excited state, the other either argon atoms or hydrogen molecules. In the ensuing chemical reaction, the argon or hydrogen molecules became ionized ? releasing electrons.

To see if quantum phenomena were in play, the researchers looked at reaction rates ? a measure of how fast a reaction proceeds ? at different collision energies. At high collision energies, classical effects dominated and the reaction rates slowed down gradually as the temperature dropped. But below about 3?K, the reaction rate in the merged beams suddenly took on peaks and valleys. This is a sign that a quantum phenomenon known as scattering resonances due to tunneling was occurring in the reactions. At low energies, particles started behaving as waves: Those waves that were able to tunnel through the potential barrier interfered constructively with the reflected waves upon collision. This creates a standing wave that corresponds to particles trapped in orbits around one another. Such interference occurs at particular energies and is marked by a dramatic increase in reaction rates.

Narevicius: "Our experiment is the first proof that the reaction rate can change dramatically in the cold reaction regime. Beyond the surprising results, we have shown that such measurements can serve as an ultrasensitive probe for reaction dynamics. Our observations already prove that our understanding of even the simplest ionization reaction is far from complete; it requires a thorough rethinking and the construction of better theoretical models. We expect that our method will be used to solve many puzzles in reactions that are especially relevant to interstellar chemistry, which generally occurs at ultra-low temperatures."

Video Marketing Using Hand-Held Devices For The Purpose Of ...

Author: Dean McAllister | Total views: 46 Comments: 0
Word Count: 661 Date:

Before we discuss video on IOS units, let's first cover the different methods that video improves a website experience both for the individual and as a sales device to generate return for a company. A site with video material provides the individual a choice between methods of informational transfer. The viewer can impulsively switch between different kinds of media at their whim. The result of this approach is a buffet style presentation of info that can greatly enhance the interactive nature of the website and match the level of the audience's interest and time allowance. It is genuinely the promise of the net to enable the customer to choose their very own version of information transfer.

In some cases, a web site may be made to introduce a short interesting video clip upon a page loading. While the viewer might not favor this method, the company must have the option to control the viewer's experience in the site, since they constructed the site, possess the business and have the right to make this selection. The viewer can by the very same token decide to bounce from the site for whatever reason. I can say that as a business that produces auto-launching spokesperson video, we compose scripts that get watched most of the time. Our average watch time is 90 % of the length of the script.

Now let's consider the mobile device world, and in particular the Apple mobile units. Apple decided with their mobile Operating System (IOS) that videos cannot play in a browser with additional content. Instead, the video recording is required to open in a separate window dedicated to playing the video recording. This completely modifies the common website experience and turns the video watching option into an all-or-nothing decision. In other words, the video clip has to be way more vital to justify the devoted watching of the video clip over all additional material. This forces the company owner to move away from sales messages and short introductions in videos, given that the audience is likely to resent opening a 2nd window just for a laid-back message.

As a net viewer we may believe this to be a good direction for our internet experience, because business will be required to only use the most valuable content within their video recordings. However, as an entrepreneur, this is not a great direction for video marketing. It is very comparable to television commercial advertising. If viewers were offered the option of closing a separate window that revealed the commercial and going back to their programs, nobody would see commercials. Can you envision just how nationwide brand names and large business could continue to be in the national eye without TV advertising?

Customers do not always know what's best. You might walk into any type of furnishings shop on Labor Day and take a casual poll of the consumers. First you would certainly discover that they are in the store that day for the Labor Day sale since they saw, reviewed or heard an advertisement. Second you could ask them if they appreciate commercials on television or if they wanted that there were no commercials at all. Of course 99 from 100 of them would certainly say they do not like commercials, and yet they would certainly be standing there getting a really good package on a couch because of a commercial. So the ad assisted them get info and assisted the company owner bring consumers to his door.

In similar way, video in a website should sometimes take the format of a short informative commercial, however given that internet browsers do not go to websites to enjoy commercials, they will certainly resent opening a new window on their iPhone to enjoy a commercial. It wasn't suggested to be an all or nothing choice to see that the commercial but the IOS video playing demands forced the website owner into that corner.

Felipe Massa positive about Ferrari's performance in Korean GP ...

Felipe Massa positive about Ferrari?s performance in Korean GP ? Formula 1 news

Felipe Massa has expressed confidence regarding the performance of his racing team Ferrari at the Korean Grand Prix taking place tomorrow at the Suzuka racing track.

Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull racing team had set the fastest pace in the second free practice session. Massa finished in sixth position behind Vettel while teammate Fernando Alonso came in third. Both drivers completed within 0.6 seconds of the pace set by Vettel. ?

Massa has admitted to the fact that the one lap pace has been a weak point for his team this season but they are going to concentrate on being competitive rather than winning the race this weekend.

?I'd say this weekend has got off on the right foot, but the important thing is to continue down this path tomorrow and Sunday, when it really counts,? Massa said. ?Our car seems pretty good on this track, which is cause to be hopeful, even if we will only discover the truth tomorrow in qualifying.?

Teammate Alonso also backed the same kind of comments. He stated that while he had seen an improvement in his pace during the practice session; Ferrari had not been focusing on improving times. He said that it is difficult to compare themselves to their opponents but they were mostly trying to improve their own individual performance. He expressed his concerns about the difficulty of the third sector in the track saying that it consists of corners mostly. He pointed out that the practice session had been fruitful as they achieved the goals they had set.

Massa also commented on the difference between soft and super soft but added that they didn?t find them difficult. He also appreciated the tyre compounds stating that they had been helpful for the team and will give them a chance to be among the qualifying teams.

??Now we are trying to prepare as well as possible for qualifying, which looks like being very closely contested: there is some very strong opposition and we will have to do everything perfectly if want to be able to match them,? he added.

Networking: The Secret of Successful Real Estate Investing

Real Estate networking at the 2012 BiggerPockets Real Estate Investing Summit

Most seasoned real estate investors will tell you that there?s no secret to success when investing in real estate.

There are other real estate investors who claim that there is a secret to real estate investing success?as long as you buy their $50,000 personalized coaching product.

I think they?re both right.

There is a secret to success in real estate investing?but you don?t have to buy a $50,000 coaching product to discover it.

The truth is its free?and although most people don?t do it ? anyone can do it.

The real secret to real estate investing success is?(drum roll please): networking.

Real Estate Investing Success Secret Revealed!

A survey of 12,000 business professionals conducted by the Business Networking International group helps clarify why. The study found that people who claimed that ?networking played a role? in their success spent an average of 6.3 hours networking per week.

However, the people who spent less than two hours per week networking did not reap much reward from it at all. The study clearly showed that the MORE time you devote to the activity of networking, the higher degree of success you are likely to have.

Interestingly, the people in the survey who on average did just over six hours of networking per week claimed they derived nearly 50 percent of all their business from referrals ? and these referrals were a direct result of networking.

Oftentimes, these referrals are not directly from the person they network with, but are what?s referred to as ?second tier referrals,? meaning they came from other people through the person originally networked with.

It?s clear that the more networking you do, the more success you have.

How Relationships Factor Into Good Networking

One of the more interesting facts that came out of the survey was that out of the 12,000 survey participants, men spent MORE time networking than women did, but generated a lower percentage of their business from referrals than did the women.

Are women just better networkers than men?

Could be . . . and there seems to be a logical reason for this.

Men?tend to be more formal and transaction-based when networking. This is called ?cut to the chase networking?, and it?s not nearly as effective as the kind of networking women do.

Although not true in every case, men simply talk about business first and then talk about personal matter afterward, whereas women tend to do the exact opposite.

Oftentimes when men attempt to focus on the relationship first, the strategy comes across as forced. Then out of awkwardness, they get on to business talk ? because it?s safer and easier to discuss.

What man hasn?t been guilty of that?

As Jerry Seinfeld once said, the idea of small talk to a man is three things: sports, women and what?s in the fridge.(not necessarily in that order).

Get Personal?Grow Your Business

The study showed that women just tend to be better with genuine small talk, getting personal without coming across as too personal, forced or calculated. When you are natural and easy in your manner, people like you better and respond more favorably to you. Men tend to stiffen up at these times and oftentimes more so than women.

Women focus on ?the relationship first and the business second.?

This emphasis on the relationship first was a key factor that the study identified and no matter if you?re a woman or a man, we can all do it better.

The people in the study who had claimed to have achieved a high level of their business success through networking overwhelmingly felt that it was far better to build the relationship first, then focus on the business.

Women just happened to be better at this than men, but many male responders had done an extremely good job of achieving this objective. So it doesn?t matter whether you are a man or a woman, build the relationship first and do the business after.

The more you focus on getting to know the other person and understanding them intimately, without crossing the line, tends to be a better strategy when networking.

How to Become a Better Networker

Oftentimes, at ?networking events?, Ive found that it?s difficult to develop a relationship all at once. Sure, attending Chambers of Commerce meetings, Business Networking International meetings, Rotary Club events and REIA meetings are great places to meet people and get to know people.

However, the real relationship occurs when you take that card or contact, then reach out to the person and invite them to lunch, breakfast or coffee. That way, your relationship has a very good chance of elevating to the next level of intimacy.

The trust and goodwill you create by getting to know them on a very personal level is the ?social capital? that energizes a mutually rewarding business relationship.

So if you feel that networking has not contributed to your success, you are most likely doing one or both of these two things wrong:

  • You aren?t doing enough of it ? six-plus hours per week is a good start
  • You aren?t doing it right ? you?re probably going for the business before the relationship

In my experience, the more networking I do, the more my business grows. Every hour I spend networking is an hour well spent ? whether its meeting new real estate investors for joint ventures, real estate brokers, Internet marketing guys, home inspectors, builders or private money lenders.

And networking is how you grow your real estate investing business and it all starts with forging these kinds of relationships through networking.

Networking Is Part of Your Marketing Plan

Don?t think of it as a chore that you have to do. Think of networking as a part of your marketing plan. The more you do it, the better you become and the more you get out of it. Just don?t be transactional, instead be relational.

Sometimes the best contacts I?ve ever met are the ones where I don?t actually talk business until the very end of the conversation as a ?oh, by the way, what is it that you do?? If you?ve gotten to this point where you?ve built a strong, comfortable relationship before you even bring up business, then you are certainly on the right track. Chances are very good that not only will a good personal relationship evolve from that conversation but a good mutually beneficial business relationship as well.

So take the next step and look around your area for networking opportunities like Chamber of Commerce networking nights, local real estate investor groups on meetup.com, local REIA meetings or BNI groups. You don? have to join all of them, just do a few to get your feet wet. Dedicate a certain percent of your time to attending these events each week.

Then once you?re there, be personable and relational, not transactional. Get to know people, then talk business. With all these groups, you are all there for the same reason, so the business talk is a natural progression, just let it come naturally.

Once you do all this, you?ll start to notice how much your real estate investing business will start to grow?and you didn?t have to pay $50,000 to learn how to do it.

What do you think? If you made it this far, please leave me a comment below!?I?d love to hear about what you think of your secrets to real estate investing success or questions about anything at all relating to real estate!

Consumers looking to take control of their energy costs will be able to get the latest energy efficiency advice from npower at this year?s Grand Designs Live.

Visitors to Grand Designs will be able to meet with npower?s energy experts, receive?energy efficiency advice, discuss what renewable technologies are available to them and sign up to receive more information about the Government?s new Green Deal initiative, as it progresses.

npower is inviting visitors to the stand to learn more about how to create a warmer home, including how the Green Deal might help them to achieve this. The aim of Green Deal is to revolutionise the?energy efficiency of British properties and reduce carbon emissions. With the Green Deal, households will be able to receive finance in the form of a loan, to help pay for energy efficiency improvements, such as loft, cavity or solid wall insulation. It works on a ?pay as you save? principle allowing consumers to repay the loan in instalments via their energy bill. As well as avoiding potentially large up front costs, which can be a massive barrier, consumers can take comfort in the knowledge that repayments should not exceed the estimated savings on their energy bills ? the so called ?Golden Rule?.

Visitor?s who sign up to receive more information about the Green Deal and request an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for their home from npower, will automatically be entered into a free prize draw for up to ?5,000 worth of energy efficiency improvements.

David Titterton, npower?s Director of ECO and Green Deal Delivery said: ?Saving energy for consumers is key to running a successful energy services business. There are significant changes to government legislation taking place which, in principle, should make access to key energy saving improvements easier for everyone. The Green Deal is a fundamental shift in the way that people can finance energy efficiency improvements for their home.

?While the final details are still being worked on, we want to encourage as many people as possible to find out more about the Green Deal and energy efficiency. So why not come down to Grand Designs and visit us at our stand.?

Grand Designs Live is taking place until October 14th at the NEC and is the UK?s leading home show. The event will have over 500 exhibitors, across six different sections, covering interiors, gardens, home improvement, renovations and technology. Visit npower on stand B550.

Instant Payday Loans: Procure Bucks Unless Payday Approaches ...

Finance | Loans | * Written by Bob Moore | Friday, 12 October 2012 01:53 | Word Count: 471

Though there are loads of loads of loan lending companies yet it is very difficult task for the borrowers to choose the best out of them. Therefore, there is instant need to make a good search of the suitable lender with the applicable rate of interest and with the least tasks. If the applicants find such type of fiscal assistance, they are able to fill up the loan application form at once. Therefore, the lenders have programmed instant payday loans that are only for those people, who have been banking on their paydays only. Alone jobbers are able to take the adoption of these loans after reading the entire terms and conditions of these loans. There is no tiring task at all because the borrowers are having the stable job. So, take the full assistance of finance via applying for the loans quickly.
Online service is also available for the fiscal -affected borrowers, who have the scarcity of the fund. The candidates are able to make their access to the website of the lender. Thus, they are able to get the entire terms and conditions. In this way, they are able to mention the name, permanent address, current or saving bank account number, age proof, pay slips, work experience proof and the contact number of office into the online loan application form. ?The loan provider does not ask the clients to fax the confidential papers to the lender because it is a bit risky to fax the personal credentials. The important papers may be circulated form one place to another. That?s the reason; the lender does not make any demand from the borrowers. Thus, the applicants are able to get the fund in the range of ?80 to ?750 or more than that. The fund is quickly approved because the lender does not include the lengthy paper work. And the approved amount is mechanically and immediately wired into the six months old valid bank account of the borrowers within a day.
Unseen fiscal crises can be covered up with the help of instant payday loans that must be refunded within the next paychecks. These loans are planned for the short-term. Therefore, the lender does not demand any sort of precious collateral from the applicants, who must be brimmed with the criteria only. These criteria are necessary for the applicants, who need to borrow the urgent fund.
Instant payday loans are not having the inflexible terms and conditions because these loans offer the last minute fund to the salaried people only for the short period of time.

Scammers, spammers target Idahoans - Idaho Statesman

Janice Peterman was eating dinner at home in Payette last week when she got a suspicious telephone call.

The caller told Peterman in a thick accent that he was calling from Microsoft. He was even using a phone number from the Seattle area, where Microsoft is based.

Peterman said the caller told her that her computer ?had contacted Microsoft saying it was being invaded by all these viruses, and (identity thieves) would come in and take all my information, and they needed to fix it for me.?

The 70-year-old was skeptical. How would Microsoft get her phone number?

?He was scaring the hell out of me,? she said. ?And I thought, ?I?ve got a bulletin for you, dude: I think you?re full of crap.? ?

After hanging up, she called back the phone number and found it was invalid.

The next day, she picked up the Statesman and saw a brief story about the Federal Trade Commission going after tech-support caller scams and halting six of them.

?They?re still doing it,? Peterman thought.

The FTC believes tens of thousands of consumers have been tricked into giving callers remote access to their computers and paying $49 to $450 for bogus virus and spyware removal.

Most of the alleged scammers used telemarketers to call consumers, using 130 different phone numbers. One alleged scammer placed ads on Google that showed up in searches for tech-support phone numbers.

?The tech-support scam artists we are talking about today have taken scareware to a whole other level of virtual mayhem,? said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz.

The Consumer Protection Division of the Idaho attorney general?s office and the Better Business Bureau in Boise have received reports of suspicious tech-support calls to Idahoans.

To report a solicitation that seems like a scam, contact the attorney general?s consumer protection team at 334-2424 or the FTC at (877) FTC-HELP (382-4357).

The attorney general?s office recommends obtaining as much information as possible from the caller, such as an address, without giving out any of your own information.

Peterman said her daughter works in the tech industry and travels the U.S. setting up software.

?People my age, we did not grow up with computers, and all these words out there ? they?re going to steal your identity, they?re going to steal your money,? make it easy to be frightened, she said. ?I am lucky in that I have (a daughter) like that to turn to, and I have someone who can get on my computer and see what this birdbrain is talking about.?

She contacted the Statesman hoping to spread the word that the scams are still occurring locally.

?If somebody is asking you to do something you don?t understand, especially with your computer, just say no,? she said.

Employed Vehicle Auto Loan ? Ideas On Financing Your Utilized ...

Get Financing Initial, Then Auto Shop

Pre-approved automobile loans have a number of benefits. Initial, you discover out what you qualify to borrow before you get stuck?

Employed vehicles are not as effortless to finance as new cars. Lenders are far more hesitant of financing cars with unknown pasts. Even so, you can find reasonable rates on auto loans by lining up your financing ahead of you go auto shopping. A down payment of 10% or more, plus purchasing with an auto dealer can also enhance your rates.

Get Financing 1st, Then Car Shop

Pre-authorized automobile loans have a number of benefits. 1st, you locate out what you qualify to borrow just before you get stuck in a contract. You can also play around with loan terms to find an affordable month-to-month payment. And sellers are eager to close a deal with a buyer that has secure financing.

Utilized vehicles loans typically need a slightly larger rate, usually .6 or far more, than new vehicle loans. Nevertheless, rates differ broadly in between lending firms, so it pays to shop about. Processing your loan prior to your automobile buy relieves you from the pressure of signing with the first lender you locate. It also saves you money in lower rates.

Strategy On 10% Down

ten% is most frequently needed for an utilised vehicle loan. It signals to the lender that you are investing in this obtain and are willing to make payments. A more substantial down payment can boost rates and offset low credit scores.

Another way to conserve money is to decide on a brief term loan. Because an employed car almost certainly wont last as lengthy as a new vehicle, 5 and three year loans make the most monetary sense. You save on interest costs and can begin saving for your next automobile.

Purchasing With A Dealer

Some lenders also offer you greater rates when you acquire via an automobile dealership, even with employed cars. You must weigh all your choices when applying for this variety of auto loan.

Dealerships normally give a partial warranty for their used vehicles they also charge much more. You may be capable to uncover an excellent deal in the classifieds, but there is a level of threat with that acquire. However, the difference in interest rates among these varieties of loans is much more than 1%.

Microwave Garlic to Make It Even Easier to Peel [Food Hacks]

Microwave Garlic to Make It Even Easier to Peel The two bowl method of peeling garlic is one of my all-time favorite methods, but if that garlic is really tough, this trick from Cooks Illustrated magazine and NPR's food blog, The Salt, might help: 15-20 seconds in the microwave.

All you need to do is pop the garlic in the microwave, zap it for a few seconds, and the garlic cloves will slip right out of their papery husks with a little squeeze. It's even easier than the two bowl method, and 20 seconds won't hurt the garlic in the process. How does it work? NPR's Allison Aubrey explains:

I emailed Gavin Sacks, assistant professor in the department of food science at Cornell University. "My guess is that ... the microwave will heat the water in the garlic, causing cells to rupture," he says. The resulting steam breaks the bonds between the skins and the flesh.

Any down side? Well, microwaving the garlic is akin to blanching it, which Sacks explains will partially inactivate some enzymes. "Since the pungent compound in garlic is formed enzymatically, once raw garlic is crushed or cut, it is likely that the resulting microwaved garlic will be less pungent than non-microwaved garlic."

She goes on to explain that when she tried it she didn't notice a change in the flavor or texture of the garlic, and despite reservations about using the microwave, she notes that it's an essential tool in any cook's arsenal. The tip appears in this month's issue of Cooks Illustrated.

Don't buy a Chevy Volt, lease it - Personal Finance

GM?s lease incentives for the Chevy Volt have helped transform what could be a pretty pricey lease deal into something attractive.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? If you?re considering buying General Motors? plug-in Chevrolet Volt, forget it. You?re much better off leasing the car, experts say.

General Motors Co (GMPRB) is spending heavily on incentives for the Volt, which hadn?t been selling as quickly as the automaker had once hoped. But instead of just handing out big rebate checks to car buyers, GM is offering extraordinarily low lease rates.

Right now, you can lease a Chevy Volt for two years for only $269 a month with a roughly $2,800 down payment. If GM weren?t helping out, that lease payment would be $450 a month, according to car pricing analysts at Truecar.com.

Besides those savings, Volt owners can save about $114 a month on fuel costs compared to a typical car, according to the EPA. According to Voltstats.net, Volt drivers are routinely getting between 100 and 150 miles per gallon.

Related: Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive

Ordinarily, a Chevy Volt costs bout $40,000 to buy, before a one-time $7,500 federal tax credit. A buyer might pay about $600 a month for the car with a $4,000 down payment, according to the car cost analysts at Truecar.com. Those figures include GM?s 0% financing incentive on a five-year loan.

That?s a hefty monthly payment, even if you figure that, yes, you will be eligible for that big tax credit.

When leasing, a customer doesn?t get the tax credit. Instead, the leasing company will take that tax credit for itself and pass along all or most of it to the customer in the form of that discounted lease rate.

Normally, plug-in cars should cost a lot to lease because they don?t hold their value well, said Ricky Beggs, president of Black Book, a company that tracks used car values for auto dealers and financing companies. In a lease, the customer is essentially paying for the value the car loses over the life of the lease, plus various fees and interest.

But GM?s lease incentives have helped transform what could be a pretty pricey lease deal into something attractive, Beggs said.

Related: 9 electric car stalls, misses, and crackups

Beggs calls the lease incentives a ?win-win? for customers and the automaker since they?re clearly working to sell the cars. GM had a record Volt sales month in August when lease incentives were even more attractive than they are now.

Besides that, anything that gets cars out onto the streets is good for marketing and helps build momentum, GM spokesman Rob Peterson said.

?There?s still a lot of people who don?t even realize these cars are in dealerships,? he said.

But these lease deals are costing GM some serious money. According to Truecar.com they add up to about $10,000 per car, including all types of incentives.

?I don?t know if I would call it a good deal for GM,? said Alec Guitierrez, an analyst with Kelley Blue Book, a competitor to Black Book. ?It?s a really aggressive lease promotion.?

But at least customers are getting into the cars, Gutierrez said, and GM figures they?ll like them.

?I think they?re betting people are going to maybe hold onto it at the end of end of the lease,? he said.

It?s a reasonable bet, considering that the Chevy Volt has the highest customer satisfaction ratings of any compact car, plug-in or not, according to J.D. Power.

If customers do enjoy the Volt so much that they buy out their lease and keep the car, that would prevent one big downside of lease promotions: a relative glut of used Volts hitting the market in two or three years.

While a glut of cheap, used Volts may not be great for GM, it would be a boon for customers. Dont buy a Chevy Volt, lease it

Analyst Reduces U.S. Ad Growth Forecast, Remains Bullish on ...

?

Barclays Capital analyst Anthony DiClemente?on Thursday cut his U.S. advertising growth forecast for 2012 and 2013, but reiterated his positive stance on Hollywood conglomerate stocks despite gains over the first nine months of 2012.

He now predicts 4 percent ad growth, down from 4.6 percent in 2012, and 1.9 percent, instead of 2.3 percent, in 2013 due to "the choppy economic data since our last update in April."

He also took down his TV ad estimates saying that "the Olympics had a greater than expected effect on ratings" of networks that didn't carry the Summer Games. DiClemente's national broadcast TV ad growth projection for 2012 moved down from 9.2 percent to 8.6 percent, while his cable TV forecast went from 7.5 percent to 7.2 percent.

But the analyst wrote in a report: "We remain constructive on U.S. advertising as it has been relatively resilient - particularly TV and online advertising - to the cyclical bumps experienced over the last few years."

He highlighted that fourth-quarter TV advertising growth should re-accelerate thanks to easier year-over-year comparisons, political ads and new programming.

DiClemente also said he remains positive on big media stocks overall as the sector "continues to trade at a 27 percent discount to consumer discretionary [stocks] despite faster expected growth."

And he reiterated Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. as his top pick with an "overweight" rating, which is similar to other firms' "buy" rating.

Meanwhile, Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Claudio Aspesi?in a Thursday report highlighted ad challenges and new competition for European free-to-air broadcasters.

"Our estimates for advertising revenue growth between 2011 and 2015 for the free-to-air broadcasters in our coverage are materially below the expected TV ad market growth in the respective countries, reflecting the expectation of further share losses," he wrote.

"Pay TV, which is structurally advantaged in the acquisition of content,...drives audience erosion," Aspesi said. And new technologies "provide a daily news flow of further threats."

But overall, he concluded: "TV is unlikely to die, but the economics will likely deteriorate."
