Misconceptions about eating disorders | Diet-Fitness-Health-Healthy ...

I think that in p!nk?s video she meant that doing it like, in public and, you know acting? the way the girl in the video did is a bit, stupid. And there are people like that in real life, i have seen them, so it wasn?t stereotypical.
This is coming from someone who would purge because of being bullied for my weight, I wouldn?t comment if i didn?t know anything about eating disorders. P.S. I love your video?s on self harm, they are really helping me, thank you <3

Abstract: A series of novel 1-(4-substitutedbenzoyl)-4-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine derivatives 5a?g was designed by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine with various benzoyl chlorides and characterized by elemental analyses, IR and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Cytotoxicity of the compounds was demonstrated on cancer cell lines from liver (HUH7, FOCUS, MAHLAVU, HEPG2, HEP3B), breast (MCF7, BT20, T47D, CAMA-1), colon (HCT-116), gastric (KATO-3) and endometrial (MFE-296) cancer cell lines. Time-dependent cytotoxicity analysis of compound 5a indicated the long-term in situ stability of this compound. All compounds showed significant cell growth inhibitory activity on the selected cancer cell lines.

Keywords: 1-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine derivatives; cell proliferation; benzoyl chlorides; cytotoxicity; cancer

News organizations don't all get ruling right

This television frame grab shows CNN broadcasting the Supreme Court's decision on President Barack Obama's health care law on Thursday, June 28, 2012. Both CNN and Fox News Channel incorrectly reported Thursday that the law's central provision, requiring virtually all Americans to have health insurance, had been struck down. Both networks backtracked when it became clear that the court upheld the provision. Broadcast networks broke into regular programming to deliver special reports and generally got it right. To get the news out quickly, competitive news organizations had to wade through pages of legal writing. (AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) ? A rush to quickly report the Supreme Court's decision on President Barack Obama's health care law on Thursday tripped up some news organizations that got it wrong and had to quickly correct themselves.

Both CNN and Fox News Channel initially reported incorrectly that the law's central provision, requiring virtually all Americans to have health insurance, had been struck down. In an apology, CNN said it "regrets that it didn't wait to report out the full and complete opinion regarding the mandate."

The Associated Press got it right, as did other news organizations and broadcast television outlets, generally. A minute after the AP flash alert at 10:07 a.m., The New York Times asked its readers for time, with Washington bureau chief David Leonhardt posting that reporters and editors were analyzing the decision.

"Once we are comfortable with its basic meaning, you can expect a torrent of coverage," he said. The Times next sent news via Twitter at 10:20.

It was a particularly embarrassing muff for CNN, which has suffered through one of its worst ratings quarters in several years, primarily due to a paucity of big news. The network eagerly awaited the Supreme Court's decision Thursday, running a "countdown clock" on its screen during the morning ticking down to 10 a.m.

Anchor Wolf Blitzer and reporter Kate Bolduan quickly reported that the health care law was struck down, based on a reading of Chief Justice John Roberts' decision that the mandate was not a valid exercise of congressional power under the commerce clause. Later in the reading, the justices found other reasons for upholding that portion of the law.

CNN's screen read: "Supreme Ct. Kills Individual Mandate."

"The court striking down that mandate is a dramatic blow to the president," said John King, CNN reporter.

The network also sent an email reporting that the mandate had been struck down and posted the news on Twitter.

By 10:13 a.m., some doubt had seeped in and the onscreen headline read: "Supreme Court Rules on Obama Law."

"Let's take a deep breath and see what the justices actually decided," Blitzer said. "It could be more complicated than we originally thought."

By 10:15, the network was reporting that the entire law had been upheld, and King called it "a huge, huge victory for President Obama."

Fox made the same initial mistake, with Bill Hemmer touting the "breaking news" that the individual mandate had been declared unconstitutional. Fox anchor Bret Baier tweeted the same news. Within two minutes, however, Megyn Kelly was citing the SCOTUSblog in casting doubt on that interpretation, even ordering producers to change an onscreen headline that read: "Supreme Court Finds Health Care Individual Mandate Unconstitutional."

"We're trying to do the best we can," Hemmer said.

Michael Clemente, Fox executive vice president of news and editorial, was unapologetic. "We gave our viewers the news as it happened ... Fox reported the facts, as they came in."

Several members of Congress tweeted incorrect information about the ruling, perhaps based on the initial misreading by cable networks.

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California called it a "big win for liberty and the Constitution. Rep. Tom Rooney (R, Fla.) said it was "great news for the American people, victory for constitution."

On CBS, Jan Crawford spoke on the air as she scanned the decision. "It appears, based on our quick summary, that the mandate, the individual mandate at the heart of this case may be in jeopardy under one provision of the constitution but they may have upheld the mandate under another provision."

ABC initially bobbled one detail ? calling the ruling 6-3 instead of 5-4 ? but correctly reported the outcome in a special report by Terry Moran. NBC's Pete Williams said that "the bottom line here is the Supreme Court has upheld the health care law."

Nissan to produce Sentra at Canton; add jobs

CANTON, Mississippi (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co said it will add workers and start production of the Sentra compact sedan at its Canton plant in Mississippi later this year.

Adding Sentra production along with two previously announced vehicles by the end of the year will mean 1,000 more jobs at the plant, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said at an event held at the Canton plant on Thursday.

Nissan officials said 400 of those jobs have already been added to prepare for production of the Xterra mid-sized SUV and the mid-sized pickup truck Frontier, which is starting in November.

Total employment at the Canton plant will rise to 4,500 by year's end, Nissan officials said.

The move comes amid efforts already under way by the United Auto Workers union to organize the existing 3,900 workers at the Nissan plant.

The UAW, along with some Mississippi politicians and the head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), early this month announced an effort to organize the Canton Nissan workers.

THE SENTRA DRIVE

The Canton plant near the Mississippi state capital of Jackson is also the production site of Nissan's best-selling Altima mid-sized sedan.

The Sentra will be the second all-new model to hit U.S. dealerships in the next 15 months, Nissan said. Sales began a few weeks ago for the 2013 Altima, the first of those five new vehicles.

By the year's end, seven different vehicles will be made at the Canton plant, which Bryant said was a "remarkable" accomplishment.

Bill Krueger, vice chairman of Nissan Americas, said that in 2011, 69 percent of the Nissans sold in the United States were made in North America, and that by 2015, that figure will rise to 85 percent.

Prior to the announcement on Thursday of the addition of Sentra production, Nissan had invested $2.06 billion at the plant, which opened in 2003. Krueger said Nissan will spend more than $20 million on capital improvements at the plant to add the new production.

Production at Canton by next year will be 450,000 vehicles annually, up from the current capacity of 400,000, Krueger said.

Last year, when Toyota Motor Corp opened a new plant near Tupelo in northern Mississippi, Bryant, then governor-elect, said he would resist UAW efforts to organize auto workers. He took the same stance on Thursday in Canton, but said that he will not spend state money to do so. Rather, he will support professional organizations that resist the union.

"I don't believe, personally, that we'd see this growth in the automobile industry to include Toyota and Nissan and the many suppliers if we had union growth in the state of Mississippi," Bryant told reporters at the Canton plant.

The UAW has tried unsuccessfully to organize Nissan workers before. In 2001, workers at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee plant voted overwhelmingly against joining the union.

Companies looking to hire workers who are likely to be wooed by union organizers will carefully screen applicants, said Kristin Dziczek, labor relations expert at the Center for Automotive Research.

"It is typical for firms to work very closely to screen their new workers for skills and characteristics," Dziczek said on Thursday.

"I would expect these new workers to be screened for characteristics like gender balance and diversity and be screened for their union proclivities. The union knows it. The company knows it," said Dziczek.

Nissan's Krueger said: "We're looking for great workers with a great attitude and willingness to learn, that's really the key."

NISSAN U.S. SALES

Nissan is aggressively adding to its production of vehicles at the Canton plant, its plant in Smyrna, Tennessee and in Mexico to boost the No. 2 Japanese automaker's profile in the competitive U.S., Canadian and Mexican markets.

Nissan's goal is to achieve a 10-percent market share, up from 8.2 percent in 2011 and 6.2 percent in 2006, Krueger said.

The Sentra for the North American market is now made at the Nissan plant in Aguascalientes in Mexico. Production of the Sentra will continue at Aguascalientes, Nissan officials said.

Sentra sales fell 18 percent in the United States through May this year to 46,773, while Altima sales rose 21 percent to 135,289. Overall, Nissan sales, including its luxury Infiniti brand, rose 12 percent through May, less than the auto industry's gain of 13 percent.

In the United States, Nissan is the sixth-largest automaker and the third-biggest import brand after Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd.

Crunch time for Congress on student loans | News and Finance

It?s crunch time for Congress, with interest rates on student loans subsidized by Uncle Sam slated to double to 6.8% on July 1.

Some 7 million students taking out loans for the next school year will have to dig deeper to pay them off if Congress doesn?t halt the increase.

The issue has become a political talking point. Last week President Obama again called for congressional action, using the issue to stump for votes.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers agree the interest rate should hold steady. The big sticking point is how to pay the roughly $6 billion price tag to extend the low 3.4% rates for another year.

House Republicans already passed a bill to extend low rates for a year, but Obama threatened to veto it, because it repealed part of the new health care law. Republicans also sent a letter to the White House suggesting other ways to pay for the extension.

Ignore the debt hype. College is a great investment

"Bicameral Republican leadership has offered alternative (ways to pay for the extension) drawn from the president?s own budget," said Michael Steel, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner. He added the House is waiting for the Senate to act.

In the Senate, leaders in both parties said they are "close" to an agreement.

What?s at stake: More than 7 million undergraduates have subsidized student loans, which means the federal government absorbs some of the interest on loans for lower- and middle-income families based on financial need. (Read: What the student loan hike rate means to you)

If Congress does nothing, the cost to an average student for one year is about $1,000, according to the Congressional Research Service no faxing payday loan.

The cost over a four-year education of paying the higher 6.8% rates for students borrowing the maximum $23,000 in subsidized loans is close to $5,000 over a 10-year repayment period, according to calculations by student advocacy groups.

The cost: The federal government has to find $5.8 billion to pay for the temporary extension, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

And that?s a big reason why House Republicans haven?t been inclined to go along with extending the rate.

How it got to this point: The interest rate for subsidized student loans used to be 6.8%. But when Democrats took over the House in 2007, they phased in lower rates. The rates fell to the current low of 3.4% for subsidized Stafford loans this past school year, but are scheduled to revert back to 6.8% for the 2012-2013 school year.

And with unemployment just below 24% for teenagers and 14% for ages 20 to 24, more young people are going back to school or staying in school, according to recent data by Equifax.

Additionally, more students struggle to pay back those loans. Student loans that are three months late rose 14.6% in 2011 from the year before, according to Equifax.

What happens next: Negotiations on student loans are ongoing between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. If there?s no deal before July 1, lawmakers will have to pass an extension before leaving for their July 4th recess.

Futurity.org ? For super fast data, give light a twist

Twisting light to send data at dramatically increased speeds maybe used to build high-speed satellite communication links or be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers. (Credit: "optical fiber" via Shutterstock)

USC (US) ? Twisted beams of light are able to transmit more than 85,000 times more data per second than broadband cable, a new study shows.

The work might be used to build high-speed satellite communication links, short free-space terrestrial links, or potentially be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers.

?You?re able to do things with light that you can?t do with electricity,? says Alan Willner, electrical engineering professor at the University of Southern California. ?That?s the beauty of light; it?s a bunch of photons that can be manipulated in many different ways at very high speed.?

As reported in the journal Nature Photonics, Willner and an international team of researchers used beam-twisting ?phase holograms? to manipulate eight beams of light so that each one twisted in a DNA-like helical shape as it propagated in free space.? Each of the beams had its own individual twist and can be encoded with ?1? and ?0? data bits, making each an independent data stream?much like separate channels on your radio.

Their demonstration transmitted the data over open space in a lab, attempting to simulate the sort of communications that might occur between satellites in space. Among the next steps for the research field will be to advance how it can be adapted for use in fiber optics, like those frequently used to transmit data over the Internet.

The team?s work builds on research done by Leslie Allen, Anton Zeilinger, Miles Padgett, and their colleagues at several European universities. ?We didn?t invent the twisting of light, but we took the concept and ramped it up to a terabit-per-second,? Willner says.

Jian Wang, the lead author, left USC after completing this research and is now a professor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

Researchers from the US, China, Pakistan, and Israel contributed to the research that was funded by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the InPho (Information in a Photon) program.

Computer Forensics ? A Real World Application | Internet Contents

Everyone?s so caught up these days in computer forensics and forensic science to solve murder mysteries like those seen on the TV series CSI. But computer forensics is not all murder and police drama. There are far more necessary reasons for those in this particular industry, and a very interesting case has come up recently involving the company Nintendo.

After noticing a recent news article from Australia, I was surprised to find that a US and Japanese based video game company was bringing a law suit forth to an Australian man who violated international and US and Australian copyright laws. After an Australian game store accidentally released the new Super Mario Brothers game for their Wii system six days before Nintendo had scheduled a global release, a 24 year old Australian named James Burt broke through the game?s code and illegally uploaded the game to the internet, allowing thousands to download the game illegally onto their own computers without paying Nintendo any money. This perhaps cost Nintendo millions of dollars.

So how did Nintendo track down Mr. Burt from the hundreds of millions of computer users across the world, to the millions in Australia, to those in his area, to find out that he was the one who illegally uploaded the game? They used computer forensics specialists, trained to trace the tracks of Internet usage to find the source of the uploaded games.

Nintendo?s forensic specialists, trained in top computer forensics programs, were able to trace all downloads of the game, starting from the beginning. Once the original download was found, the upload was traced by time and IP address. Using computer forensics tracking programs, Mr. Burt?s IP address was matched with his location and he was apprehended by local law enforcement.

The next step for the computer forensics specialists was to present the information and evidence they were able to uncover during their investigation to the lawyers and judge in the courts, where Mr. Burt was found guilty of illegally uploading property belonging to Nintendo, and distributing it without Nintendo?s consent. The courts in Australia found Mr. Burt liable for $1.3 million USD toward Nintendo?s lost earnings. Additionally, $100,000 of Nintendo?s accrued legal fees were also designated to be paid by the defendant.

If it weren?t for the expert specialists working for Nintendo, the company would not have been able to locate the defendant and most likely would not have been able to recoup the millions of dollars in lost revenue. Proof that computer forensics and forensic science is not all murder and mystery, but used every day to solve all types of modern-day crimes and investigations.

Understanding Senior Care and Elder Law

Senior care and elder law are closely related industries that seek to provide care and protection for one of our most vulnerable populations -- senior citizens. But while distinctly different, senior care and elder law often intersect when it comes to the needs of our aging family members. Understanding what each is and how it can help your elder loved one can significantly improve the lifestyle of your entire family.

Senior care is a healthcare field dedicated to providing basic assistance and medical care for seniors. The field broadly refers to three primary types of care:

In Home Care -- The type of care that allows for the highest level of independence, in home care is provided by skilled professionals in the home of the elderly person. This can include full time, part time or relief care services.

Assisted Living -- Assisted living generally refers to a community designed, built and managed in such a way as to provide long term support to seniors. Members of assisted living communities often live in their own apartment or condominium and have access to a variety of senior care services.

Nursing Care -- Nursing care is the most intensive level of care and offers full medical services including medication management. Nursing care residents live in a specialized facility staffed by nurses and their aides, and in some cases psychiatrists and medical doctors are part of the regular staff.

Elder law is a relatively new field of law that deals exclusively with legal issues related to senior citizens. This includes estate planning, wills and trusts, laws dealing with insurance and medical care, and laws that protect the elderly from neglect or abuse.

Senior care and elder law intersect in the following 2 ways:

1.) Life Decisions

There are complicated laws surrounding legal issues like wills, long term care and estate planning. These laws require legal counsel even in the most ideal situations, but what often happens is that families begin asking about these laws only after a crisis has occurred.

For instance, in the case of an elderly family member suddenly taking ill and being unable to make their own rational decisions, legal intervention is often required in order for long term care to proceed. And in cases of dementia where family members want to provide care at home; there are legal responsibilities that must be undertaken when doing so.

The best solution to these problems is to create a plan before crisis occurs.

2.) Protection from Abuse

It's unfortunate that we would need them, but there are laws in place that protect seniors from neglect or abuse. In many cases the punishment for violating these laws are severe and come with hefty prison sentences. Family members that suspect their loved ones are being mistreated can take action by invoking elder law. Authorities are required to rigorously investigate any such claims.

Senior care is ultimately governed by elder law, so developing an understanding of the two is critical to providing a lifetime of support for an elderly family member. To learn more, call a professional in home care giver or senior care provider for an immediate consultation.

A One-Two Punch for Your Physique ? Scottsdale Personal Training

If you want to get in the best shape of your life, Scottsdale Personal Trainers suggest trying this technique on for size. It?s called SUPERSETS. A superset is two exercises performed back-to-back, without resting in between.

For example, let?s say you do a set of bench presses. As soon as you?re done, follow it up immediately with a set of lat pulldowns. After you?re done with that back exercise, you can rest. Then, repeat the process.

Working out this way burns tons of calories, according to Scottsdale Personal Trainers, mainly because of the intensity ? you?re not resting in between sets. Supersets also stimulate the production of Growth Hormone (GH) in your body. GH is the hormone that helps you both burn fat and build muscle.

Think of supersets as a one-two punch that works your muscles, your heart and lungs (think cardio). Here?s a sample superset workout by Scottsdale Personal Trainers you can start using right away.

Antagonistic SUPERSET Workout

For this workout, you?re going to work opposing muscle groups. For example, you?ll work chest then back?biceps then triceps?quads then hamstrings.

SUPERSET #1

Dumbbell Bench Press ? Grab two medium weight dumbbells. Lie on a flat bench. Press the dumbbells up toward the ceiling. Do 10-12 reps.

Bent Over Barbell Row ? Grab a light to medium-light weight barbell. Bend over about 45 degrees while keeping your lower back straight and flat. Hold the barbell palms down and let your arms hang straight in front of you. Bend your elbows and lift the barbell toward your sternum. Do 10-12 reps.

Rest 60 seconds and repeat this superset two more times, resting 60 more seconds at the end of the superset.

SUPERSET #2

Biceps Dumbbell Curl ? Grab two light to medium-light dumbbells. Stand and let your arms hang to your side. Curl both dumbbells up at the same time, and turn your palms to face your body. Then bring the weights down. Repeat 10-12 times.

Triceps Pushups ? Get into pushup position. Bring your hands close together, so that your thumbs are basically touching each other. Slowly lower down and then press back up. Do 10-12 reps.

Rest 60 seconds and repeat two more times, resting 60 seconds after the superset.

SUPERSET #3

Jump Squats ? Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and squat down. Jump up as hard as you can, and reach your hands up to the ceiling. Repeat 20-30 times.

Stiff Leg Deadlifts ? Grab two medium weight dumbbells. Stand upright holding the dumbbells at your thighs with your arms straight and your feet hip-width apart. Lower the dumbbells to just below your knees shifting your hips back and keeping your legs straight and back flat. Return to the upright start position. Do 10-12 reps.

Rest 60 seconds. Repeat two more times, resting 60 seconds after each superset.

Try this superset workout by Scottsdale Personal Trainers, and once you get comfortable with it, add new exercises. Just make sure you follow the principle of opposing muscle groups. You?ll love how effective and intense it is to work out this way. More than anything else, you?re going to love the results!

Egypt military decree curbs next president's authority

CAIRO ? The Muslim Brotherhood claimed victory in Egypt's landmark presidential runoff election early Monday, but its historic rise to power was blunted by a decree from the ruling military council to greatly limit the authority of the nation's next leader.

The army's action was the latest maneuver by deposed autocrat Hosni Mubarak's old guard to hold sway over the country even as its longtime nemesis was promising a new era, marking a dramatic shift in fortunes in the Arab world's most populous country. The military decree gives the generals control over passing laws and prevents the next president from overseeing the army's budget and declaring war without the consent of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

The move sours the victory the Muslim Brotherhood is projecting for its candidate, Mohamed Morsi, a religious conservative who is seen as heralding an untested political Islam in a country that since the 1950s has been governed as a secular police state. Official results have not been released, but the Brotherhood said Morsi had defeated Ahmed Shafik, the last prime minister to serve under Mubarak, in an election that polarized a nation left dispirited by months of unrest.

The struggle between the military and the Brotherhood, whose members were arrested and tortured throughout Mubarak's rule, now moves to a more chilling battle for the country's political future. Over the last week, the army has shown that it will not easily cede power: The nation's constitutional court dissolved the Islamist-dominated parliament, and the Justice Ministry granted the generals wider authority to arrest civilians and political activists.

"Thanks be to God who has guided Egypt's people to the path of freedom and democracy, uniting the Egyptians to a better future," Morsi said early Monday. He added that he would not "seek revenge or settle scores." Egyptian media reported that the Brotherhood projected that Morsi, a USC-educated engineer, had won 52.5% of the vote to Shafik's 47.5%.

"Down, down with military rule," a crowd chanted outside the headquarters of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. The Brotherhood also announced it would challenge the court decision to disband parliament. The army's power grab opened a "new episode of a complete military coup against the revolution and the popular will," said Mohamed Beltagy, a Brotherhood lawmaker.

Shafik's campaign disputed Brotherhood claims that Morsi won Egypt's first freely contested presidential election: "Our counting of the votes has so far showed that we are ahead with 52% of the vote, but we refuse to break the law and issue any numbers now," spokesman Mahmoud Baraka told Reuters.

A retired air force general, Shafik had run a law-and-order campaign promising to stem Egypt's rising crime, political dissent and economic turmoil. That message was overshadowed by suspicions stemming from his ties to the old government and comments that suggested he was still loyal to the 84-year-old Mubarak, who has been sentenced to life in prison for complicity in the killing of more than 800 protesters during the rebellion that toppled him in February 2011.

The apparent victory by the Brotherhood capped more than 80 years of struggle by the world's most prominent Islamic movement to parlay its grass-roots religious and social programs into political clout. But Morsi did not win a mandate. Voting lines in cities and villages were thin, indicating that many of the country's 50 million eligible voters were demoralized by two candidates whose backgrounds and ideologies are polar opposites and did not resonate beyond their constituencies.

What Egyptians may end up with is a shadow democracy that fails to fulfill the ideals for change that spurred the popular revolt and helped inspire uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa. The Brotherhood, which can easily mobilize tens of thousands of followers and was the muscle in the revolt against Mubarak, had threatened protests and a "second revolution" if Shafik won. But it is now unclear how it will counter the military's hold on the government. Army and Brotherhood officials have been meeting in recent weeks, and since early this year, when Islamists took control of the now-disbanded parliament, the Brotherhood has at times cooperated with military desires.

That may change if Morsi is officially named president and the Brotherhood moves to capitalize on its new political legitimacy. But that is limited by the lower than anticipated turnout for the election. A judge on the nation's constitutional court said only 40% of eligible voters cast ballots. Each side accused the other of voter fraud and the rhetoric sharpened as the race tightened and the polls closed Sunday evening. Egyptian media reported that military police raided at least two Morsi campaign offices.

Egypt's predicament suggests that its revolution, which captured imaginations around the world, may have been largely cosmetic, changing the face of power but not its heart. That was evident when the military council announced that it would issue its decree snipping presidential powers. Many activists and revolutionaries chose to boycott the election; others invalidated their ballots by defacing them or checking boxes for both candidates.

"Both candidates are wrong. I will not vote for someone I am not convinced of," said Abeya Elbanhawy, a co-founder of We Are Watching You, an election monitoring organization. "We don't have a constitution. We don't know the powers of the next president and we don't have parliament, so how can we even vote under these circumstances?"

She added, "We aren't apathetic by voiding [ballots] because we are going to the polls to send a message and also make sure our ballots aren't forged."

Other Egyptians believed the election was a historic event that could set the nation on a path of stability.

"There needs to be hope," said Shadia Fayez, who cast her ballot in a poor Cairo neighborhood. "I voted for Shafik because he can bring back stability and a better economy. I have no fears of Shafik bringing back the old regime.... Who had ever heard of Morsi before these elections?"

The day was punctuated by fears of unrest and colorful accusations of vote buying and bribery. Egyptian media reported that "several knife-wielding" Shafik supporters attacked Morsi backers in the town of Fayoum. The Ahram Online news website said that a wife of a leading figure in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party "went to the polling station to cast her ballot and found that someone had already voted for her."

Many Egyptians worried that even as the country was choosing a president, the military, which is controlled by Mubarak-appointed generals, was intensifying its hold. Shortly after the polls closed Sunday, the army moved quickly to cement its grasp, locking parliament's door as its soldiers patrolled voting stations and bolstered barricades in an expanded martial law.

"This law that allows the military to make random arrests will give Shafik and the military the complete powers," said Ahmed Alish, a 25-year-old activist. "I can oppose a party or movement like the Brotherhood, but we will not be able to stand up to the system and institution that Shafik and the army would strengthen."

Sony: Why Vita gives us an advantage over Wii U

The Vita's impressive horsepower gives Sony an important advantage over the Wii U and its tablet controller, so says Sony Worldwide Studios VP Scott Rohde.

Speaking in an E3 interview with GamesIndustry International, Rohde argued that Vita-to-PS3 connectivity inherently holds more potential than the Wii U's dual-screen offering as both Sony systems boast their own processor.

"That Wii U tablet doesn't have a processor in it, so it's got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV," he said.

"We can do some pretty special things that you'll start to see on the [E3] floor this year and you'll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that's in your hand as well."

Of course, the Wii U gamepad comes with the system, while a Vita is a separate console retailing at around ?200. Sony had only sold 1.8 million Vitas worldwide by the end of March, and it's unclear how many of those buyers also own PS3s, of which 63.9 million have been shifted globally.

"It's only been three months though, just three months. There are a lot of games on that machine and I think what we have to hang our hat on... Every single person that actually picks that thing up absolutely loves it," Rohde said in Vita's defense.

"If you're a gamer and you pick up a Vita, you're going to have fun. And you're going to use it over a device like this [points to an iPhone] if you really want a game.

"Look at two of the titles that are here at E3, PlayStation All-Stars and Sly 4, for example. Both available on Vita and PS3, and there's some sort of interactivity across the board. Developers are interested in that kind of stuff," he added.

"We have a lot of good things coming. And some of the games that we have coming out in the near future, they do cross out into the mobile space a little bit... it's absolutely natural for games to do that. You see all the big third party publishers have been doing it for a while."

Despite the Vita's relatively high cost and sluggish start at retail, Rohde was unwilling to discuss a potential price drop, though he added that Sony has been discussing what's "going to be best for the consumer."

Vanilla Ice Dead? Not at All, Hoax Be Damned!

Someone must not have liked his cameo in That's My Boy.

Vanilla Ice is not dead, despite a hoax that suggested he rolled his car and perished this morning. The Iceman confirms he is among the living!

The "Ice Ice Baby" rapper took to his Twitter page this morning to smack down rumors spreading on social media that he died in a car wreck:

"I don't know who's spreading this rumor about me dying in a car crash but - IM ALIVE!! I have like 30 texts, from mom family and friends," he said.

Vanilla Ice Photo

The culprit behind this latest celebrity death hoax is the time-honored Global Associated News, the notorious site responsible for generating fake news.

Eddie Murphy, Charlie Sheen, Jeff Goldblum, Jon Bon Jovi and others have been facetiously offed by the site in recent years for no reason at all.

In Vanilla Ice's case, its bogus report alleged the 44-year-old hip-hopster "died in a single vehicle crash on Route 80 between Morristown and Roswell."

That should've been a giveaway right there, he was killed somewhere between New Jersey and New Mexico? That's hard-hitting journalism for you!

Per the rumor, Ice (real name Robert Van Winkle) lost control while driving a pal's car at 95 m.p.h. and rolled over several times, dying on impact.

Drugs and alcohol were NOT involved at least. Phew.

Relief from Greek election likely to be fleeting

(AP) ? Europe is still in big trouble ? despite an election result in Greece that lessens the likelihood of an imminent disaster.

Victory by a party supporting Greece's bailout deal opens the way for negotiations with its international creditors on giving it more time and room to fix its broken finances. And European officials are signaling a willingness to talk and avoid a disastrous aid cutoff that could force Greece out of the euro.

However Spain's borrowing costs are climbing ever higher and Europe's governments are struggling to agree on putting new foundations under the euro and drag it out of a crisis over too much government debt. And any hopes that a key June 28-29 summit of European leaders may produce any bold recue plans look likely to be dashed.

South African innovator takes water out of showering

JOHANNESBURG | Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:32pm EDT

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - With inspiration from a friend too lazy to take a shower and a few months of research on the Internet, South African university student Ludwick Marishane has won global recognition for an invention that takes the water out of bathing.

Marishane, a 22-year-old student at the University of Cape Town invented a product called DryBath, a clear gel applied to skin that does the work of water and soap.

The invention, which won Marishane the 2011 Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award, has wide applications in Africa and other parts of the developing world where basic hygiene is lacking and hundreds of millions of people do not have regular access to water.

The product differs from the anti-bacterial hand washes by eliminating the heavy alcohol smell. It creates an odorless, biodegradable cleansing film with moisturizers.

He came up with the idea as a teenager in his poor rural home in the winter when a friend of his said bathing was too much of a bother, made all the worse by a lack of hot water.

"He was lazy and he happened to say, 'why doesn't somebody invent something that you can just put on your skin and you don't have to bathe'," said Marishane.

It was his "eureka" moment.

He then used his web-enabled mobile phone to search through Google and Wikipedia in pursuit of a formula. Six months later, he came up with DryBath and a obtained a patent.

The product is now manufactured commercially with clients including major global airlines for use on long-haul flights and governments for its soldiers in the field.

Marishane also sees it helping conserve water in the poorest parts of the world.

"DryBath will go a long way in helping communities".

French Socialists win absolute parliament majority

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande's Socialists won a resounding parliamentary majority on Sunday, strengthening his hand as he presses euro zone paymaster Germany to support debt-laden states weighed down by austerity cuts and ailing banks.

The Socialist Party and its affiliates secured 307 seats in the parliamentary election runoff, according to the final count for mainland France, comfortably more than the 289 needed for a majority in the 577-seat National Assembly.

The left-wing triumph means Hollande, elected in May, won't need to rely on the environmentalist Greens, who won 16 seats, or the Communist-dominated Left Front, with 10 deputies, to pass laws. The centre-left already controls the upper house of parliament, the Senate.

"This gives power and a backbone to the government," said Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, calling the result a vote of confidence in Hollande's government that would enable it to forge ahead with its economic and euro zone policies.

"Europe's future is at stake in the weeks ahead," he said.

The mainstream conservatives, who oppose Hollande's plans to raise taxes on the rich, won 224 seats.

The far-right achieved a breakthrough, winning three seats and giving the National Front a voice in parliament for the first time since the mid-1980s, after an anti-euro presidential campaign by party leader Marine Le Pen struck a chord in a nation struggling with 10 percent unemployment.

Le Pen narrowly lost her race in a working-class northern town, but her 22-year-old niece, Marion Marechal Le Pen, granddaughter of the anti-immigrant party's founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, was elected in the southern town of Carpentras. Lawyer Gilbert Collard, a non-member who was chairman of Marine Le Pen's support committee, and estranged former party member Jacques Bompard won the other two seats in the south.

The leftward swing gives the Socialists more power than they have ever held as Hollande pushes for new tools to stimulate growth in the sickly euro zone and a European banking union that would protect depositors and states if banks fail.

Political turmoil in Greece, where parties that support the country's international bailout were heading for a slim win on Sunday that leaves many problems unresolved, is piling pressure on Europe's leaders to act to contain the bloc's debt crisis at a summit later this month.

Sunday's victory may help Hollande secure parliamentary backing for steps towards a euro zone fiscal union that Berlin is demanding as a condition for agreeing to his push for a growth pact and reforms to improve financial stability.

"It's a much bigger majority than expected," said political analyst Mariette Sineau at the CEVIPOF institute. "It can only reinforce Hollande's position internationally rather than having a weak majority and being hostage to the Greens and Left Front."

The Socialist leader flies to Mexico on Monday for a Group of 20 summit that will be dominated by the euro zone's woes as a rift with the bloc's paymaster Germany over how to resolve the crisis has sparked a rare public squabble.

PARTY UNITY OVER EUROPE KEY

Hollande, a pro-European social democrat, has broken with a Franco-German power duopoly established under his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy and is siding with southern euro zone states, calling for more flexibility on deficit targets.

He also wants a European banking union giving the European Central Bank power to supervise cross-border banks, with a joint deposit guarantee and a resolution fund, intended to ensure that bank collapses hit shareholders before taxpayers.

With the right now severely weakened, Hollande's strong hand will be a boon as he readies a wave of legislation for the weeks ahead to raise taxes in line with his tax-and-spend program and ratify a European Union fiscal discipline pact.

As well as avoiding dependence on Eurosceptical or conservative lawmakers, Sunday's win will leave Hollande's mainly social democratic and pro-Europe cabinet intact.

All senior ministers, including Moscovici and Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, won their parliamentary races.

Ayrault said the government would throw its energy into bolstering public finances, stimulating growth and bringing down unemployment, in the euro zone as well as France. "The goal is to shift Europe towards growth and protect the euro zone from speculation. The task before us is immense," he said.

Hollande, who can count on the backing of his Greens allies in the lower house, will need every parliament vote he can get if a public finance audit due by end-June shows that he must slow down his spending promises to meet France's deficit goals.

One key supporter, his former companion Segolene Royal, who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2007, was beaten on Sunday in the western city of La Rochelle by a left-wing rebel backed by Hollande's current partner, Valerie Trierweiler.

Royal's defeat, making her ineligible for a cabinet post, creates a headache for Hollande, who will need to find a face-saving role for her, especially after a tweet by Trierweiler backing her rival set off a media firestorm.

Another big loser was centrist Francois Bayrou who was punished by centre-right voters for having thrown his support behind Hollande at the last minute. Bayrou lost a seat he had held since 1986, leaving the political centre virtually devoid of a voice after his third presidential bid ended in a crushing fifth place finish in April.

Hollande will still have to work to keep his party united and rally Eurosceptics among the Socialists behind economic and European policies that may be unpopular with the public, such as Germany's demand for deeper euro zone political integration.

Ayrault said earlier on Sunday that any steps towards European federalism would need to ensure that national parliaments provided oversight.

Hollande lacks the two-thirds majority he would need to make constitutional changes that would be required for example to give EU institutions more control over national budgets, a key concession demanded by Berlin in return for more fiscal support.

"Hollande will certainly feel emboldened to carry things through and negotiate at the European Council," said Christopher Bickerton, associate political science professor at Sciences Po.

"Momentum is building for him. Whether he can garner that to push forward his agenda in Europe is the most crucial question."
