(AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators are marching peacefully in Paris to denounce austerity measures in Europe that have sparked violent protests in other EU countries struggling to avert fiscal crises.

The march organized largely by the "Left Front" party and the Communists comes ahead of the French parliament's debate this week on a European fiscal treaty.

The treaty would set up the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund that European leaders hope will help calm a debt crisis that threatens the euro zone and the global economy.

The main conservative opposition party and most of President Francois Hollande's Socialist Party back the treaty. But it has splintered the French left: Far-left parties, the Greens and some dissident Socialists oppose it.

Austerity has fanned recent violence in places like Spain and Greece.

A grassroots funding effort in Puerto Rico enables genome sequencing of the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot

September 28, 2012, Hong Kong, China The international open-access journal GigaScience (a BGI and BioMed Central journal) announces the publication of a unique study providing the genome sequence of the critically endangered Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata) by Taras Oleksyk and colleagues at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The sequencing and analysis of the genome of the only surviving native parrot in US territory provides numerous benefits for avian genetics, conservation studies, and evolutionary analyses. What is remarkable here, and highlighted in an accompanying commentary by Steven J. O'Brien of St Petersburg State University, is that it shows how accessible genomic technology has become. With the human genome project taking a consortium of the leading international genome centers a decade and $3 Billion USD to carry out, just over a decade later the genome of the Puerto Rico parrot was assembled at a small institution in Puerto Rico, and completely funded by the community. Money was raised in a variety of creative ways, including student organized art and fashion shows (see: http://youtu.be/tXW-pNoM9uU), social-networking sites, and private donations from Puerto Rican citizens wanting to promote research on their local wildlife. This project serves as a signal that work on large-scale whole-genome projects is becoming more democratized, and opens the door for more creative input from outside the large genome centers.

Dr. Oleksyk, the primary organizer of this project, said, "We are very proud of our project and even more proud to be part of a local community dedicated to raising awareness and furthering scientific knowledge of this endangered bird." He further added, "Community involvement may be the key for the future of conservation genetics, and many projects like this are needed reverse the current rate of extinction of birds across the globe."

The Puerto Rican Parrot once flourished throughout Puerto Rico, but its population rapidly declined during the 20th century due to extensive habitat destruction. By 1975, only 16 birds remained. Since then, through extensive conservation efforts including captive breeding programs in Rio Abajo and El Yunque and bird release into the wild, the number of these parrots has grown. The population, however, still remains exceedingly low and on the critically endangered list. Recent conservation efforts for other endangered species are now working to incorporate genome information to better assess the genetic health of endangered species and provide tools for targeted breeding, and the long-term prospects of this enigmatic bird will be given a boost given the new genomic resources provided by Oleksyk and colleagues. The authors estimated the parrot's genome size as ~1.58 Gbp, about half that of the human, and, at this stage of the project, provide 29x sequencing coverage of 76% of the genome. Assembly and annotation of the genome were carried out as part of the undergraduate education program at the university, which is not only a boon for developing technically savvy young scientists in Puerto Rico, but also serves as an example of how students can take part in community curation projects to aid in processing the increasingly unmanageable amounts of data now being generated throughout the world.

In keeping with the scientific community's goals of making all data fully and freely available, all data from this project are available in the GigaScience database, GigaDB, in a citable format, and are available as raw reads in the ENA (Accession # PRJEB225) and as scaffolds with assembly parameters in GenBank (Accession # PRJNA171587).

PST: Beckham returns to Galaxy practice

Let?s be clear about this: The Los Angeles Galaxy does not need David Beckham to get a top three placing in the West.

Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane, Juninho and Marcelo Sarvas are doing simply delightful, thank you very much, running the attack with confidence and verve. The side can keep its spot in the standings (currently tied for second) without him.

But ? the Galaxy probably will require Beckham?s golden right foot to optimize chances of playoff success. San Jose, Seattle and even Real Salt Lake on a good day will be obstacles in the West either way, so a healthy, happy and hopping-quick Beckham can only assist matters.

So, Galaxy supporters will be happy to hear that their man Becks is back at training. So says official Galaxy blogger Adam Serrano, who is all over Home Depot Center matters these days.

Beckham has missed his team?s last two MLS matches and a Champions League contest. The former England captain is listed as day-to-day for this weekend?s match in Colorado.

After that, the Galaxy has three MLS matches and one Champions League contest for Beckham to polish up the touch and fitness.

importance of fruits | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

Fruits are a delight to the human senses. Fruits are the most attractive, delicious, and nutritious of all foods available. Decorating a fruit tray may sound interesting but it can be a real hassle if you aren?t aware of the different fruit types. The importance of fruits in your diet can be attributed to the fact that they contain many vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are necessary for optimum digestion.

Fruits are the best source of natural sugar and are packed with anti-oxidants. They are high in fiber and low in calories. Fruits are also low in sodium so they help reduce the chance of gaining weight due to fluid retention. Protection from illnesses is yet another benefit we gain from consuming fruit.

Fruits also protect your body from cancer-causing free radicals and slow down the effects of aging.

Fruits are at their best when eaten in the raw and ripe state. A fruit platter is a lovely addition to any gathering. A large dish decorated with various fresh fruits arranged in a pattern can be extremely delicious and appetizing. All fruits should have their individual places in the platter so that it gains a uniform appearance.

Here are a few fruit platter ideas which may be of use to you:

For a perfect fruit platter you must add a variety of fruits with different colors and textures.
Be careful with fragile fruits such as berries which get crushed easily.

Place them on the top of the bowl as garnishing.

The key to create a good looking fruit platter is to cut and slice your fruits into similar sized and shaped pieces.
You must ensure that you choose your fruits well. Shop for bright colored fruits with different textures in order to add variety to the platter.

It is very important that all the fruits are washed well and dried.

A fruit platter looks even better when you make two sections of fruits. One section can have whole fruits such as grapes, cherries, and berries and the other section can have sliced fruits which include apples, bananas, and oranges.
You can also slice melons and pineapples so they are displayed in their rinds.

Some of the predictive factors that show immediate value are used to best utilize an employee: whether they prefer working solo or in a group, whether money or recognition motivates them, if they are highly detail oriented, or whether or not they'll rock the boat (which could be a good thing! - like suggesting a more efficient process to replace an old, tried, and true one). This helps a manager provide a working environment that best allows an individual to excel, or to position people in groups so any perceived faults are covered with an overlap.

What also ends up being really important in these tests - to employers at least - is whether or not these people tend to lie, steal, or cheat, to abuse drugs or alchol, or may simply be reliable or not. Yes, if you crunch the numbers, you can take a good guess and produce a weighted prediction about this just from a personality profile.

When you're hiring for Walmart or Home Depot or some other vast chain with a large population of unskilled workers, weeding out the likely-to-be-bad ones shows a real financial impact, tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year, statistically proven. Though the damages may not reach into the millions, smaller business owners are even more impacted by this.

- Must be applied properly

Some businesses, like Keller Williams Reality, do not apply their personality profiling properly. They use a Jungian based personality matrix - simplified slightly - to pigeonhole an applicant. If you do not fit the hole specified for the job, you don't get the job. They even make a big deal about how everyone applying for every position is required to do this, even if it's the next CEO (which was probably a lie, but c'mon, these folks are salepeople at heart). However, they decide in advance which single personality a given job requires, and if you don't match it exactly, you're out. So if you apply for a programmer position, and you're an extrovert, you won't get the job. If you're creative - you don't get the job. You have to correspond to THEIR sterotype.

Obviously this is wrong.

As the parent poster can probably tell you, the proper way to do it is to have your current employees take a test, sort by role, and attempt to find people who are close to the personality traits that your star individuals have in common. You'll also have to update this over time as market or work environments change.

This works because we're producing sample data, isolating trends, and using it to predict success based on commonalities. It's simple statistics. This is how we can 'catch' drug abusers and thieves before the fact: using the personality profiling tests data from criminals, we can find people who match their common traits. It may sound harsh, but the false positive outliers are exactly that - outliers. The vast majority is predictable to a reasonable degree.

Application of this information is a standard practice in risk analysis. If you're hiring for a casino dealer, and your applicant shows up as being 80-90 out of 100 match with career criminals, maybe consider a bit more carefully or do a full background check, or maybe just don't hire them - find a less risky applicant.

- Can be gamed

Most of these tests are straightforward. There's rarely any tricks or clever 'gotchas'. This isn't like a police interrogation where they're trying to trap you. They're personality profiles, and they don't have 'correct answers'.

However, if you can successfully role take, you can determine the outcome without much guile. This is hard for many people to do, granted, which is why we're not all professional actors, but it is possible. Just don't be shallow about it. Don't think "The perfect casino dealer would never even steal a paperclip - that's what they want!"... no, a real casino dealer will occasionally abscond with an office pen or pack of sticky notes, and feel jealous when someone wins half their yearly salary in a single hand. Roleplay a real person, and you should be fine. Roleplay a caricature, and you'll be found out easily.

(hint: never, EVER, say that you _NEVER_ lie, or _NEVER_ steal. Everyone does, a little, and that's a hint that you're attempting to deceive, which is always a bad thing).

- My own personal opinion based on 8+ years of experience with these systems

is that this is primarily valuable for filtering the unsuitable candidates for unskilled blue collar or entry-level white collar jobs. As per the article, the biggest value they see is recouping their 5,000$ training fee. In many places, it's simply to find someone who won't run off with the register contents, or won't show up high - or not at all.

On the employer's side, managers are simply not equipped with the training, or more often, the responsibility and power together, to ensure that the positive aspects that can be derived can be put to use. They don't often have the latitude to randomly swap group members or provide quiet work areas and so on. At least, not in an environment that relies on specialty/skilled workers. When everyone is an interchangeable unit, this is suddenly possible.

So for a skilled worker, their renumeration combined with their ability to dedicate themselves to achieve a goal (skill mastery, degree, etc) overrides some of these concerns. Everyone wants to be happy at work, but in the end, they wouldn't call it 'work' if they have to pay you to show up. These folks can mentally compensate and still be exceptionally happy, productive workers without a perfect environment, or without being a perfect 'fit'.

Elder Care in Houston TX Legal Issues: What Does a Will REALLY Do for Your Family?

Frequently there is talk about ?getting one?s affairs in order?. With poor health or aging, just when a will becomes more crucial, we are so often overwhelmed with the day-to-day necessities of care that a will is even more neglected. It is a responsibility of those in elder care to ensure that the patient expresses his wishes through a written will.Elder Care Houston TX

An Elder Care Advocate

An elder care?advocate should counsel the patient regarding a will early in the relationship. Many wills have been disregarded by courts due to delay; a will may be disregarded if the patient is on certain pain medications or if the patient?s mental state is otherwise questioned.

Dying intestate (without a will) causes major hardships and additional stress on the entire family. With no legal direction and little legal standing an executor will be faced with costly delays and additional work. During these delays, bill collectors can create more stress for the family.

When There is a Death in the Family

Following a death in the family, grief and stress are natural, but while emotions are high the slightest dispute can spiral into a family feud that will split the family just when they need solidarity. Without clear and written direction as to the loved one?s wishes, disputes arise over funeral and burial arrangements as well as disposal of family treasures and keepsakes.

The most important element of control anyone has over their estate is the appointment of an executor. Someone who can be trusted to do as we would. With no will, someone will need to petition the court to become the executor. The petitioner need not even be a member of the family, but simply what the courts call a ?person with interest?.

Most laws do not provide for those who are not natural children or current legal spouses unless there is a will which includes them. In our society of loving stepfamilies and extended families, this has caused untold and unintended grief.

Keeping it Legal Makes it Easier

When there is a legal, notarized will, things are simpler. For large estates, an attorney will generally keep a copy which can be read at the family?s request after the funeral. For a simple will, a copy may be filed at the courthouse (there is a small fee which varies according to jurisdiction) and a copy kept with other valuable papers.

With or without a will, the process of settling debt and distributing assets after a death is called ?probate?.

At least 200,000 tons of oil and gas from Deepwater Horizon spill consumed by Gulf bacteria

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? Researchers from the University of Rochester and Texas A&M University have found that, over a period of five months following the disastrous 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill, naturally-occurring bacteria that exist in the Gulf of Mexico consumed and removed at least 200,000 tons of oil and natural gas that spewed into the deep Gulf from the ruptured well head.

The researchers analyzed an extensive data set to determine not only how much oil and gas was eaten by bacteria, but also how the characteristics of this feast changed with time.

"A significant amount of the oil and gas that was released was retained within the ocean water more than one-half mile below the sea surface. It appears that the hydrocarbon-eating bacteria did a good job of removing the majority of the material that was retained in these layers," said co-author John Kessler of the University of Rochester.

The results published this week in Environmental Science and Technology include the first measurements of how the rate at which the bacteria ate the oil and gas changed as this disaster progressed, information that is fundamental to understanding both this spill and predicting the behavior of future spills.

Kessler noted: "Interestingly, the oil and gas consumption rate was correlated with the addition of dispersants at the wellhead. While there is still much to learn about the appropriateness of using dispersants in a natural ecosystem, our results suggest it made the released hydrocarbons more available to the native Gulf of Mexico microorganisms."

Their measurements show that the consumption of the oil and gas by bacteria in the deep Gulf had stopped by September 2010, five months after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. "It is unclear if this indicates that this great feast was over by this time or if the microorganisms were simply taking a break before they start on dessert and coffee" said Kessler. "Our results suggest that some (about 40%) of the released hydrocarbons that once populated these layers still remained in the Gulf post September 2010, so food was available for the feast to continue at some later time. But the location of those substances and whether they were biochemically transformed is unknown."

Previous studies of the Deepwater Horizon spill had shown that the oil and gas were trapped in underwater layers, or "plumes," and that the bacteria had begun consuming the oil and gas. By using a more extensive data set, the researchers were able to measure just how many tons of hydrocarbons released from the spill had been removed in the deep Gulf waters. The team's research suggests that the majority of what once composed these large underwater plumes of oil and gas was eaten by the bacteria.

Professor John Kessler, recently appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Rochester, worked with graduate research assistant Mengran Du at Texas A&M University to analyze over 1300 profiles of oxygen dissolved in the Gulf of Mexico water spanning a period of four months and covering nearly 30,000 square miles.

The researchers calculated how many tons of oil and gas had been consumed and at what rate by first measuring how much oxygen had been removed from the ocean. Mengran Du explained that "when bacteria consume oil and gas, they use up oxygen and release carbon dioxide, just as humans do when we breathe. When bacteria die and decompose, that uses up still more oxygen. Both these processes remove oxygen from the water." Du added that it is this lower oxygen level that the researchers could measure and use as an indicator of how much oil and gas had been removed by microorganisms and at what rate.

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation with additional contributions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Sloan Foundation, BP/the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, and the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Good news: Dan Miller?s son received a new kidney

UFC fighter Dan Miller has been on a long quest to find health for his son, Danny, who was born with kidney problems that required near constant dialysis. Finally, Danny has kidney function after a kidney transplant on Thursday.

Dan's brother, UFC fighter Jim Miller, shared the good news.

Danny's kidney transplant was made possible in part by support of the MMA community. When insurance wouldn't pay for the transplant, Miller's fight gym held fundraisers. Jim gave the proceeds from his UFC on Fox 3 walkout shirt to his nephew's cause. Cage Potato designed and sold shirts, too.

Now, we get to see the happy ending to the story. Danny finally has kidney function.

Fish oils 'help slow age decline'

Moderate exercise, and a regular intake of oily fish fatty acids, keeps elderly immobility at bay, a study suggests.

Findings of a recent trial show that women aged over 65 who received omega-3 fatty acids gained almost twice as much muscle strength following exercise than those taking olive oil.

A larger trial is planned to confirm these findings and to determine why muscle condition improves.

The findings are being presented at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen.

Some studies have linked diets high in omega-3 - commonly found in oily fish such as mackerel and sardines - to potential health benefits, such as a lower risk of coronary heart disease.

During healthy ageing, muscle size is reduced by 0.5-2% per year.

This process - known as sarcopenia - can result in frailty and immobility in old people.

Little is known about the prevalence of sarcopenia in the UK, but data from the US shows that 25% of people aged 50-70 have sarcopenia and this increases to more than half of those aged over 80 years.

According to Dr Stuart Gray from the University of Aberdeen, the cost of sarcopenia is immense; either in direct nursing and care costs or in hospital admissions through falls.

"Around one-and-a-half percent of the total US healthcare budget is spent on sarcopenia-related issues", he said.

Tales from the farmyard

The rate of muscle loss is dictated to some extent by lifestyle - consumption of a low protein diet and a sedentary lifestyle are known to exacerbate muscle loss.

Previous studies demonstrated that livestock fed on omega 3-rich diets had increased muscle bulk.

This prompted Dr Gray to investigate whether these fatty acids could help reverse sarcopenia in the elderly.

In his initial studies, he showed by MRI imaging that middle-aged rats taking fish oil supplement had a lower loss of lean mass than counterparts fed a normal diet.

"The fish oil seemed to be having anabolic [muscle-building] protective effects in the rats, but rats aren't humans, so the next step was to try it in humans," he said.

So, Dr Gray recruited 14 women aged over 65 years and asked both groups to undergo a 12 week exercise programme consisting of two 30-minute sessions of standard leg muscle exercises.

Half the women were given the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, whist the other half received an olive oil placebo (negative control).

At the start and end of the trial, the women's leg muscle strength was measured.

The results were compelling. Women receiving olive oil increased their muscle mass by 11% whilst those receiving EPA and DHA showed a 20% increase - a statistically significant improvement.

But as Dr Gray was quick to point out, not all fish oil supplements contain beneficial amounts of these fatty acids. He told BBC News:

"One of the problems with a lot of these supplements is that the amount of EPA varies.

"A capsule containing one gram of fish oil might only contain 100 milligrams (mg) of EPA and some might contain 400".

His advice for anyone wanting to improve their intake of dietary EPA and DHA was to take a supplement that contained the highest levels of these two fatty acids.

Alternatively, half of the average portion of oily fish contains equivalent amounts of beneficial EPA and DHA as those used in the trial.

Sex difference

The researchers have now received funding to carry out a larger trial that includes 60 people aged over 65 years to confirm the beneficial effects of the fatty acids. The new trial will recruit similar numbers of men and women.

Previous research has shown that men and women differ in their ability to synthesise new protein and also in their response to exercise.

"Older women have similar levels of protein synthesis to younger women whereas older men have lower levels compared to younger men."

"Older men adapt to exercise and increase their protein synthesis. Older women don't do this to a great extent, although their basal levels of synthesis are higher," Dr Gray explained.

Assessing whether women and men respond differently to exercise and fatty acid supplements will be one of the questions that the new trial will address.

The trial is scheduled to start in the next month and will recruit people from the Aberdeenshire area.

Vancouver's Best Yakiniku Japanese BBQ Restaurant? You make ...

Vancouver is justly famous for its sushi, with hundreds (if not thousands) of restaurants around the city.? We?ve also got plenty of izakayas, the Japanese-style pubs that became popular in the late 1990s.? And we?re no slouch when it comes to ramen restaurants, which serve exclusively the popular Japanese noodle soup.

But I was surprised to discover another Japanese import in the city last week: a yakiniku barbecue. In yakiniku-style restaurants, diners cook up raw, bite-sized chunks of marinated meats and veggies over a grill built right into their tables.? It?s an interactive, hands-on form of dining, quite similar in many respects to Korean barbecue (a controversy rages to this day about whether the practice originated in Korea or Japan).

Considering how fun the experience is (and how tasty the results are), I was surprised I hadn?t tried a yakiniku restaurant in Vancouver before.? I know there must be a bunch out there, but they don?t get much attention.

Do you enjoy Japanese yakiniku barbecue?? Do you have a favourite yakiniku restaurant in Vancouver?? Let us know below.

I?ll start things off be describing my first yakiniku adventure in downtown Vancouver.? I stopped by Gyu-Kaku on Nelson and Hornby.? The sprawling restaurant opened last year without a lot of hoopla, but it was packed when I went in on a Friday night, mainly with Japanese and Korean students craving a taste of home.? You?re seated at wooden tables with propane-fired grills built right into the middle. The atmosphere is festive, but not quite as boisterous as at a rowdy izakaya.

Photo credit: Alli Jiang | Flickr

The menu can be a bit bewildering at first, with a dazzling variety of beef, chicken, seafood and vegetable options, not to mention Japanese appetizers like gyozas and edamame, plus ramen and udon soups and rice bowls.? There are also some less conventional cuts of meat, including tongue, liver and intestine.

I chose the ?#1 BESTSELLER?, the harami miso skirt steak, as well as spicy miso chicken and garlic shrimp.? Most of the meat options can come marinaded in a sauce of your choosing: from miso to yuzu, garlic, tare and more.? Servers bring your selections raw to your table and fire up the grill.? After some basic cooking instructions, you?re left to prepare your own meal.

There?s a bit of a learning curve to yakiniku.? The beef, for instance, cooks very fast, while the chicken takes a few minutes.? But once you get the hang of it, it?s a fun and very social way to dine.? Bring a few friends and add a couple pitchers of Sapporo and it makes for a very memorable night out.

Do you have a favourite yakiniku Japanese barbecue restaurant in Vancouver?? Let us know below.?

Intelligent self-repairing clothing and sensors will detect potential onset of an epileptic seizure

ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2012) ? Intelligent self-repairing clothing and sensors that can detect the potential onset of an epileptic seizure sound like the stuff of science fiction but Northumbria University designers and engineers are turning them into reality.

The cutting-edge of design and engineering visions for the future will be showcased at the launch of Northumbria?s new P?i research group at the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) in London this month.

P?i is a design research initiative that aims to accelerate the development of printable, paintable and programmable intelligent (P?i) materials capable of creating intelligent products, services and experiences.

Research from the innovative centre could change the way that people live in the future. Northumbria already has a strong reputation for producing world-changing graduates in the design field, such as Sir Jonathan Ive, of Apple, who has created revolutionary new technologies including the iPhone and iPad which have now become consumer staples.

The University?s investment in new technologies ? including a ?135,000 bioplotter machine which is capable of printing multi-component three-dimensional structures and a ?65,000 Atomic Force Microscope to look at materials at the nanoscale ? demonstrates the ambition to be at the forefront of future breakthroughs.

Melding design with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, P?i brings together leading designers and engineers to find technology-based solutions for society?s needs and future ways of living. The centre will engage in a design-led exploration of emerging materials and technologies in, on and around the human body in the 21st Century.

As part of the 2012 London Design Festival, Northumbria?s P?i members will become designers in residence at the RAE from 18-21 September, showcasing some of their innovations in the Towards Future Ways of Living exhibition.

Future products and services that combine innovative materials and fabrics with biological functions will be explored in P?i?s laboratories and studio facilities. Staff are currently at the forefront of research into anticipatory medical devices, such as the development of ?smartware? ? fabrics that treat chronic wounds caused by diabetes and leg ulcers; ?senseware? ? motion sensors embedded in textiles that can detect the onset of epileptic seizures and alert medical professionals; and ?bioware? ? technology-embedded materials and surfaces in the home and on the body.

Professor Raymond Oliver, Chair of P?i and professor of active and interactive materials, said that the work of P?i designers and engineers will place individuals at the centre of technology, devising solutions for an ageing population, developing technologies that enhance life quality and creating customised products that connect with people on an emotional level.

He added: ?Our aim is to be at the forefront of design-led, need-driven, technology-anchored and solutions-focused innovative products and services with a real purpose.?

P?i researchers include Ann Toomey, Reader in Active Materials Research, and Nancy Tilbury, Reader in Fashion Interactions. Both recently arrived scholars at Northumbria University have extensive expertise and experience in design-led innovation with active materials. Tilbury, a fashion designer by training, interrogates new materiality and fashioning for the 21st century, uniting fashion and science in her work with clients, including her work on the creation of dynamic video clothing for the Black Eyed Peas 2011 world tour.

Also on board as part of the P?i research team are Lyndsay Williams, Reader in Hardware and Software Integration, and Dr Veronika Kapsali, Reader in Biomimetic Surface and Interface Engineering.

Myanmar to allow daily newspapers next year

Myanmar's new information minister on Sunday predicted newspapers would be able to publish daily from early 2013, heralding fresh reform for a sector recently freed from decades of draconian censorship.

Aung Kyi told the Myanmar Times that state-owned newspapers -- currently the only news publications able to be printed daily -- would also be revamped with private sector involvement in the coming months.

"It is my sincere belief that daily [private sector] newspapers are essential for a democratic country," said Aung Kyi, who replaced a prominent hardliner last week when he was appointed as part of a cabinet reshuffle seen as promoting reformists in Myanmar's government.

The former labour minister, who acted as the liaison between Myanmar's previous junta government and democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi while she was under house arrest, said a code of practice should be discussed before changes were made to publication rules for private weekly journals.

He declined to give a firm date for the issuing of daily publication licences to private sector news groups -- many of which have turned to the web to provide up-to-the-minute content for a population hungry for information after years of restrictions -- but estimated it could be "early next year".

"I am sincere in wanting to achieve a comprehensive press media law that meets international standards," he said, suggesting that the new proposed legislation could be delayed to give time for consultation with journalists and experts.

In August Myanmar announced the end of pre-publication censorship, previously applied to everything from newspapers to song lyrics and even fairy tales.

State-owned dailies include the English language New Light of Myanmar, which has shown scant signs of modernising -- except for an increase in celebrity gossip -- since the country began its reforms.

But Aung Kyi said these publications were in line for "significant changes".

Since taking office last year, President Thein Sein has overseen a number of dramatic moves in Myanmar such as the release of hundreds of political prisoners and Suu Kyi's election to parliament.

Reporters jailed under the junta have also been freed from prison and a lighter touch from censors had already seen private weekly journals publish an increasingly bold array of subjects.

But there have been recent signs that it will take time for both newsrooms and the authorities to adjust to the new era of openness.

Two journals were recently suspended for a fortnight for prematurely printing stories without prior approval from the censors, prompting dozens of journalists to take to the streets in protest.

And the mining ministry is suing a weekly publication that reported the auditor-general's office had discovered misappropriations of funds and fraud at the government division.

Incredible storm photo that just won't die

    1 day

Social media and news sites have been abuzz over an amazing image supposedly showing?Hurricane Isaac. The picture was actually taken by an amateur in Brunei, but that hasn't stopped people from using it to illustrate all kinds of weird things over the years.?

Last week, something almost as cyclical as storms themselves began spreading across social media ? an old, dramatic image of a green-ish cloud hovering above water. Numerous people attributed the picture to Isaac but, as quickly as the picture spread, even making a brief appearance on Britain's Daily Mail,?people began debunking it. This image seems to pop up every time there's a big storm ? but where did it come from??

    1. A dream

This storm was used to illustrate a post about a guy's desert island dream. Scroll to the end for Adriana Lima shots.

    2. Spiritual wordplay

In 2008, Tom Cottar used the image for a blog post on spirituality and anagrams ? "Did you ever realize that Britney Spears is an anagram for Presbyterian? Or that Pepsi Cola is an anagram for Episcopal?"

    3. Climate change denial

    And the original?...

As suspected by eagle-eyed colleague John Herrman, the original photo was apparently taken by a photographer named Richard Seaman, who posted a whole bunch of photos from a trip to Brunei. Reached by email, he confirmed: "Yes, it's my photo."

Seaman issues stern take-down warnings for uncredited and uncompensated use of his work but sadly, it seems that the picture was just too good ??and too divorced from its source ? for the Internet not to use over and over again.
