How Toastmasters has helped me and can help you! ? The Blog of ...

I first got involved in Toastmasters from 1989 to 1991 and joined Mosman Toastmasters in Sydney. I worked through the first speech manual of ten speeches??(now called the Competent Communicator manual) ?and competed in a humorour speech contest. Then I dropped out because our first daughter was born and I didn?t have time to prepare speeches.

I joined Chatswood Early Risers in 2004 because I was working in Chatswood at the time and a friend suggested a morning club. I love the weekly format of one hour meetings as there are more opportunities for practice. So what skills have I learnt in Toastmasters?

I made a list of skills I have gained. You can gain these skills as well by joing a Toastmasters club and participating in the meetings. The first step is to find a club then visit.

Prepared speaking. Presenting prepared 5- 7 minute speeches on a variety of speeches usually without notes. I have used a variety of visual aids to enhance my message.

Impromptu speaking for about minute on a variety of topics given by the Table Topic Master. This skill involves recalling information, and creating a structured response.

Acted as Toastmaster (Master of Ceremonies) for the speakers at a meeting. This involves collecting information from the speakers ? biographical and introductory material for the speech. This is a useful skill for being an MC at a business meeting, conference, wedding, or private party.

Conducted meeting as the Chairman, ensuring that the meeting runs smooothly and to time.

Laughmaster is a role where I tell a joke or humorous story, adding some drama and vocal variety to the presentation. It is quite a challenge to tell a joke that isn?t rude or offensive!

Presented Toasts of 2 to 3 minutes. There is a magic formula to giving a toast and once I had given a couple of toasts, it is easy to do in other situations.

Evaluator. Evaluating another speaker and giving constructive feedback is what I really enjoy. I have to pay attention to all aspects of the speaker ? language, body language andvocal variety then summarise my recommendations in a 3 minute vebal presentation.

Mentoring new members. The greatest satisfaction of all is to help new members overcome their fears and to guide them develop their own communication style. Experienced speakers have helped me in the past and I like to pass on my experience and observations of other speakers.

Leadership skills. Serving as Club President in 2009-2010 allowed me to develop leadership skills, team building and creative thinking. I had been in supervisory roles in the past, but dealing with a group of volunteers is a different challenge. When people volunteer for something like Toastmasters I have observed different levels of enthusiasm and commitment. Building a common purpose and enthusiasm to achieve shared goals

Where have I applied these skills?

Over the last ten years my work has been in software support, software testing, technical writing and training development. However, my skills were brought into play when I presented testing methodologies to the software engineers.

I have done occasional classroom training, often to students with English as a second language. Feedback has been positive particular my clarity of speech and ease of comprehension.

I recorded voiceovers for E-Learning courses. This required two particular skills learnt in Toastmasters ? writing for the ?ear? and voice production. Text to be spoken is different to text that for reading such as this article. I did attend a Podcasting workshop and a Voice production course, both independent of Toastmasters.

Over the last two years I have presented to my industry peers at a meet-up group of technical writers in North Sydney. I was invited to speak at their annual conference in 2010 and again in 2011.

One of the toughest speeches was writing a eulogy and delivering it at my brother?s funeral. Despite the grief, I managed to write a speech from the heart and deliver at the service without an emotional breakdown.

The future

I still need to improve my vocal variety and use of gestures. Vocal exercises and more practice at meetings!

I am keen to explore the format of Ignite talks?where the speaker uses a Powerpoint deck of 20 slides with each slide automatically advancing every 15 seconds. This means the speech takes 5 minutes ?which is long enough to get your point across. ?I plan to give an Ignite talk when I next present a speech requiring visual aids.

Summary

The best thing I have gained from Toastmasters is making many wonderful friendships with the people in our club. Our members are from a diversity of professions, countries, ages, and life experience. I learn so much from their speeches and contributions to our club.

Public speaking and leadership skills are essential for our personal and professional lives. Toastmasters is a an effective and fun way to develop these skills.

"Scorpion Skin" Armor Could Help Protect Machines Against Sand Damage [Science]

As anyone who's been to the beach can tell you, sand has an uncanny ability to work its way into the most obscene places. A new surface based on a scorpion's hide, however, could prevent that. More »

Establishing Paternity FAQ | Newborn Child .net

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

In layman?s language, paternity is basically becoming a father or fatherhood. Technically, a papa contributes half of the genetic makeup of his children. (DNA tests can establish biological paternity.)

If an unmarried couple has a kid, state laws do not necessarily recognize the guy since the legal, biological pops. Establishing paternity is to take lawful action to claim fatherhood.

Advantages

With all the lawful establishment of paternity, a father can now have a social, economic, and emotional tie with his little one. Through the same token, he can ensure that their child receives the same rights and privileges as other kids.

These rights and privileges involve inheritance, admission to the father?s healthcare and life insurance benefits in addition to that of Social Security and veteran?s advantages.

Human relationships

An established paternity will afford the child to create a bond with the father.

There is certainly now a sense of identity and connection not just with the father but with their father?s household. (Moreover, it?s an opportunity to know the health care background of the dad and his family members for future references.)

Family name

Just as significant as the social and economic benefits is the youngsters correct to understand and form a bond with both mothers and fathers. Establishing paternity will now permit the kid to have and use the father?s name.

If the child?s father or mom decides not to establish paternity, the youngster won?t be be in line for the father?s surname, nor will their youngster receive any benefits.

Acknowledgment of paternity

You can find a great many ways to establish paternity. Paternity acknowledgment could be the voluntary operation of the unwed dad getting accepted as the biological papa primarily for help purposes.

This is normally signed in the hospital after their child is delivered. When the mom signs the acknowledgment, she verifies she was unwed at the time and that the man could be the biological papa.

When the father signs too he agrees that he would be the biological dad of the youngster and that he shall be liable for the child?s economic and health-related assistance until adulthood.

Assumed paternity

Some states follow what is called the Mansfield Rule. In essence, the rule states that if a child is conceived within marriage, the husband is presumed to be the father.

Since this is not always correct, some states have legislation that challenge and rebut this assumption.

Default establishment

Now and again, paternity in some states is established by default. Conditions vary but essentially if a guy won?t fulfill specific obligations, he will be named the legitimate pops of the child.

In Illinois, for instance, a man becomes a default dad for failing to attend a scheduled interview.

Judicial establishment

This is the judicial process where the alleged father refuses to acknowledge paternity. This action can likewise be employed when a mum does not acknowledge the paternity of a man who believes he is the child?s father.

With all the legitimate recognition of paternity effected by the court, the dad is now responsible for the monetary assistance of their youngster. The father likewise has the authority to visitation.

Establishing paternity entails a great deal of investments from all parties ? the father, the mum and now and again the youngster (or children) if he or she already understands things. Love should be the operative word.

Oil inches above $99 on China data, US supply jump (AP)

Oil prices inched above $99 a barrel Wednesday as investors weighed encouraging economic data from China against a jump in U.S. crude inventories and signs of sluggish growth.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for March delivery was up 63 cents at $99.11 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 30 cents to settle at $98.48 on Tuesday.

In London, Brent crude was up $1.15 at $112.13 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

China unveiled a $2.5 billion fund to finance new small businesses, promising tax breaks and more lending for entrepreneurs, while the state-affiliated China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said its purchasing managers index rose 0.2 points to 50.5 in January from December's 50.3 on a 100-point scale. A figure above 50 indicates growth.

At the same time, HSBC Corp. said its China Manufacturing PMI was little changed at 48.8 from December's 48.7, suggesting a "moderate deterioration."

The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories rose 2.1 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted an increase of 3.0 million barrels.

Inventories of gasoline fell 222,000 barrels last week while distillates added 970,000 million barrels, the API said.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday.

"Despite all the supply risks relating to Iran and Sudan, the oil market is currently characterized by excess supply, which explains the recent below-average trend in the price of crude oil," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

Investors will be closely watching the latest U.S. employment data from January on Friday. The Conference Board said Tuesday that consumer confidence fell in January from December as Americans were more worried about their incomes, gas prices and business conditions.

The housing market also continues to struggle. Home prices fell in November for a third straight month in 19 of the 20 U.S. cities tracked by the S&P/Case-Shiller index.

"U.S. economic releases tilted toward the bearish side, and that these figures followed last Friday's negative GDP guidance conjured up images of some disappointing employment data," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. "A difficult, choppy trading environment could be sustained well into February."

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 2.17 cents to $3.0726 per gallon and gasoline futures were up 2.06 cents to $2.9115 per gallon. Natural gas fell 8.7 cents to $2.416 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Amazon announces Q4 2011 earnings; all Kindle sales up 177 percent

But still no hard numbers given on Kindle Fire sales

Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon today released its fourth-quarter 2011 earnings numbers. Net income was up 41 percent year over year to $48.08 billion, but net income fell 45 percent to $631 million.

Amazon's already said that the Android-based Kindle Fire is its "best selling," "most wished for" and "most gifted device" of the 2011 holiday season, but until today it had yet to give any actual numbers. That trend continued today, though Amazon did announce that sales of all its Kindle products -- including the tablet and e-readers -- were up 177 percent over Q4 2010. Of course, the Kindle Fire didn't exist then, so large growth wouldn't be unexpected.

The Amazon Appstore did well for itself in the three months ending Dec. 31, 2011, however. Amazon says Appstore customers nearly tripled for the quarter, and than more apps were downloaded in those three months than in all previous quarters combined. The Appstore launched in March  2011.

A conference call is coming up -- we'll listen in for anything worthwile. Full presser's after the break.

Top Trends in Impact Investing 2012: #10- The U.S. Heats Up ...

Top Trends in Impact Investing 2012: #10- The U.S. Heats Up

#10 Trend in Impact Investing in 2012: The U.S. Heats Up

Last year, we previewed what we thought the top trends in impact investing/social enterprise would be, and with a few glaring exceptions, we were pretty spot-on.? In the next 10 days, we?re going to take a crack at the upcoming year (though, with it almost being February, maybe we?re cheating a bit by having a sneak peek.? Too bad.)? Without any further delay, here?s trend #10:

Most of the press surrounding impact investing has been international; over 50% of the featured social entrepreneurs in Forbes? ?Impact30? are US-based, but operating abroad (e.g. Jacqueline Novogratz, Willy Foote).? In a survey we did of over 300 impact investing funds, fewer than 10% were U.S. focused, though over 50% were U.S. based.? While some major funds and entrepreneurs (e.g. RSF Social Finance, Calvert Foundation) have been active in the U.S., the bulk of activity hasn?t been concentrated in the States.

In 2012, that will change.? We see major moves towards impact investing in the U.S. on three fronts:

  • Impact investors with an increasing U.S. focus.? Brian Trelstad, Chief Investment Officer of the Acumen Fund, is taking lessons learned from Acumen Fund and applying them to the development of a U.S. fund; Kevin Jones, founder of Good Capital and SoCap is working on the launch of his second fund later this year; and Investor?s Circle has dropped its international companies to move to a 100% U.S. focus.? More impact funds are being started?2011 saw the scale-up of Cleveland-based JumpStart and the launch of the New Orleans Startup Fund, an Acumen-model impact fund focused on the greater New Orleans region.? And the Hub Cities Fund looks to seed an ambitious number of new Hubs in North America.
  • The nonprofit sector gets more active in impact investing.? In October, Antony Bugg-Levine, managing director of the impact investing initiative at the Rockefeller Foundation (and author of the term ?impact investing), left to become CEO of the Nonprofit Finance Fund.? Many in impact investing were puzzled as to why one of the poster-boys of the impact investing movement would join the nonprofit world, but it?s indicative that nonprofits are getting more clever with how they use resources.? The Nonprofit Finance Fund has over $80 million in assets under management?larger than most impact funds in the world?and deals with organizations that most Americans come more regularly in contact with than ?social enterprises?: churches, homeless shelters, and schools.? Similarly, Village Capital?s chair, Joy Anderson, is launching the Church as an Economic Being initiative in 2012 to look critically at how churches?America?s biggest nonprofits by a longshot?use their finances to generate impact.
  • City, state, and local governments get active. ?In 2011, we saw the U.S. government get active in impact investing internationally, through USAID?s Development Innovation Ventures program and OPIC?s Call for Proposals on Impact Investing.? In 2012, we?re already seeing the U.S. government get more active in its backyard.? Nish Acharya, one of the most respected individuals in social enterprise as the director of the Deshpande Foundation, recently joined the U.S. Government as the Director of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Commerce.? On a more local level, Detroit, Cincinnati, New Orleans, New Haven, and Atlanta are all launching local impact investing initiatives.? As governments are pushed to do more with less, impact investing is looking like an increasingly compelling policy tool.

Finally, the U.S. economy is not out of the woods, but is getting better.? With a bit more risk-tolerance, but still feeling the sting of an economic recession (and the hopes to avoid another one), those with capital in the U.S. are looking to take 2012 to do things a bit differently.
