Legal Theory Blog: Legal Theory Bookworm

The Legal Theory Bookworm?recommends?Power and Constraint: The Accountable Presidency After 9/11 by Jack Goldsmith. Here is a description:

Conventional wisdom holds that 9/11 sounded the death knell for presidential accountability. In fact, the opposite is true. The novel powers that our post-9/11 commanders in chief assumed?endless detentions, military commissions, state secrets, broad surveillance, and more?are the culmination of a two-century expansion of presidential authority. But these new powers have been met with thousands of barely visible legal and political constraints?enforced by congressional committees, government lawyers, courts, and the media?that have transformed our unprecedentedly powerful presidency into one that is also unprecedentedly accountable.

These constraints are the key to understanding why Obama continued the Bush counterterrorism program, and in this light, the events of the last decade should be seen as a victory, not a failure, of American constitutional government. We have actually preserved the framers? original idea of a balanced constitution, despite the vast increase in presidential power made necessary by this age of permanent emergency.

What sociological perspective would homelessness fall under ...

Homelessness is a worldwide problem that urges many of us ask questions as to why this issue persists and how it is that we can cure this matter that continues to affect tons of people. While the bulk of the public may have a number of ways to view homelessness and the extent to which it affects individuals, Companies, And whole communities, Sociologists can look at the problem in a few techniques.
Interactional sociologists would say that the homeless customer base as a whole is ostracized from higher socio-Economic groups because of some actual exchanges (which often discourage or offend the homeless person) that occur between homeless individuals and those in literally any other economic class considered more well off than the homeless individual. Utilize, Some interactional sociologists would point to the reluctance among some employers to hire individuals who do not possess any street address and likely lack any academic or prior employment experience. This normally-Reality is a terrible frustration for many in the disadvantaged economic classes (specifically the homeless, This sort of case), And is one factor that sometimes dissuades numbers of homeless people from even trying to seek employment the first time around.
In sociology and furthermore anthropology, Social stratification is the ordered arrangement of social classes, Castes, And categories within a society. These hierarchies are not evident in all societies, But are very common in state-Level societies (as known from hunter-Gatherer or a number of social arrangements).
Based on Peter Saunders,[1] in modern Western communities, Stratification rrs determined by social and economic classes comprising three main layers: Top class, Middle-class, Reducing class. Each class is further subdivided into smaller classes included with occupation. The term stratification derives from the geological notion of strata, Or rock layers involving natural processes.
Social stratification is regarded quite differently by the primary perspectives of sociology. Advocates of structural-Functional analysis claim that since social stratification exists in most state societies, A hierarchy must therefore be valuable in helping to stabilize their existence. Talcott Parsons, As a famous sociologist, Asserted that stability and social order are achieved through a universal value consensus. Functionalists indicate that stratification exists solely to satisfy the functional requirements necessary for a functional proficiency in any society.
Conflict theorists your inaccessibility of resources and lack of social mobility in many stratified societies. They obtain, Often working from the practices of Karl Marx, That stratification means that working class customers are not likely to advance socioeconomically, While the wealthy will continue to exploit the proletariat generation after generation. Marx prominent social classes by their connection to the means of production. Meaning that ruling class- bourgeoisie, And dealing class- proletarians, Maintain their social positions by maintaining their rapport with the means of production. This maintenance of status quo is achieved by various methods of social control employed by the bourgeoisie in the period of many aspects of social life, Such as through ideologies of submission promoted from the institution of religion.
yet, Praveen Attri noticed that some conflict theorists, Mainly Max Weber and followers of his lookout, Have belittled Marx?s view, Indicating that social stratification is not based purely upon economic inequalities, But could also be shaped, To the same degree, By reputation and power differentials. Weber?s analysis indicated the employment of four social classes, Which he known as the propertied upper class, The home and property-Less along with white wines-Collar your workforce, The small bourgeoisie, And the running class. Another renown factor is cited in the work of Francois Adle, Who reported that, ?The invention [of] technology has changed the structure of mobility completely, In brief: Social stratification refers back to the ranking of social groups above and below each other, By way of how much power, Stature and wealth members have.
Never any, Edfoug, Drug abuse and mental illness would be psychologists? concerns. All the way through Sociology, A study of the abandoned would fall either under ?Social Stratification, What is the subspecialty in Sociology which studies social mobility (in this case downward social mobility) within social classes. Or it may be, You study it from a ?Deviance? On the other hand ?Social roadblocks? Bass speaker-Disciplinary facets. Regarding ?Social crises? Antique items are the image of aristocracy and nobility. A great deal of folks are hesitant to portion with this kind of antique things but forced to market them off in buy to get their house clutter totally free. Most of the time, the owners of such furnishings would feel of selling them just since they want to have much more room, not just since they are of no use.
How to day antique furniture The kind of wooden/varnish utilized, design and style of drawer knobs/handles, type of chair seats and chair backs and intricacy of carvings are just some aspects that can aid professionals precisely determine the period of time to which a piece of furniture belongs.
Since the starting of the 13th century the area of Kirman in Iran has been creating higher high quality rugs and carpets. There are several antique Kirman rugs in circulation nowadays with Furniture Repair and collectors of good arts and crafts clambering to get their fingers on them, if and when they turn out to be available on the open up market.
Now wine drinkers are not really happy with the use of the phrase vintage for anything else than defining the age of wines. Nonetheless frequent usage has used the term to the world of antiques and collectibles for over a century now in the US. Very respectable actually.

Creating money by means of the offering of very prized antiques is absolutely nothing new. Folks want to purchase antiques, and there are other individuals inclined to go out, find these sought-following antiques, then change close to and market them. It functions out nicely. There are these collectors which do this for a living, often turning out to be fairly excellent and prospering from it. They look to have a knack or perception of locating only specialized parts, and are experienced sufficient to steer clear of those antiques that won?t deliver in a great cost.
Her idea of a day of ?purchasing? consisted of perusing consignment outlets, antique shops, boutiques, and even neighborhood thrift retailers. Whilst these look like unlikely locations to find a large proportion of a home?s home furniture and ornamentation, she saved hundreds?possibly thousands?more than what the common family members might invest on the identical items purchased brand name new.
When it arrives to buying products on the antique or collectible market, the purchaser should do a lot of study before handing more than any money. Flea markets with antique stands, antique retailers, and antique malls are abundant, so dealers have a great deal of competitors in stocking their outlets. This can direct them to price their products much larger than their correct value, which is a poor financial commitment for you. Why buy an antique or a collectible for a lot more than it is worth?
1st, do your analysis and understand the qualities of furniture belonging to certain eras, depending on what you?re interested in. Make sure that you offer only with reputed antique sellers. Examine their collections and the pieces that fascinate you, ask the seller tons of questions and if you decide to acquire a piece, often get a comprehensive receipt.
Other areas you can get antique mirrors for sale are at garage product sales and on-line revenue. Be careful about purchasing in these locations however. In garage revenue, be extra specific about checking out for product top quality and any breaks. In on the internet product sales, take time to research on the type of antique mirror you want and read on reviewer recommendations and discover the very best costs and the nearest sellers, if achievable.
Now classic is even trickier as there is no institution this kind of as the US customs to outline it. Vintage is the phrase typically used by people in the antique planet to define objects that have some age and are as one states ?of a specific classic?. We would outline a chest of drawers from the nineteen thirties as being classic.

Here are a few causes why individuals lookup for antique mirrors for sale. This way you can conquer the Antique Dealers to the punch.

Gilt-Trip: Scientists Add Gold to Boost Lithium Car Battery Range

Air-breathing lithium batteries that go far beyond the capacity of current power packs may be in the offing

LITHIUM-AIR BATTERY: University of Saint Andrews chemists are searching for the right combination of materials that could make a working lithium?air battery a reality, not to mention stand up to the rigors of repeated charging and discharging. Image: Courtesy of the University of Saint Andrews

A rechargeable, air-breathing battery that can store up to 10 times the energy of today's conventional lithium ion batteries could be just the breakthrough that makes electric cars practical?if it ever leaves the laboratory. Scientists worldwide are searching for the right combination of materials that could make a working lithium?air battery a reality, not to mention stand up to the rigors of repeated charging and discharging.

Today, however, chemists have unveiled a material that seems to do the trick: gold.

Researchers at the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland are the first to acknowledge that an electric car battery made of gold would not be practical. But by using gold in an experimental battery, they have taken a crucial step on the way to a viable mass-market lithium battery that can power an electric car for hundreds of kilometers between charges.

The Saint Andrews chemists, in a paper published in the journal Science on Friday, describe how an experimental lithium?air battery featuring an organic electrolyte (dimethyl sulfoxide) and a porous gold electrode maintained 95 percent capacity after 100 charge?discharge?recharge cycles.

Scientists are interested in lithium?air batteries because the current lithium ion technology has inherent storage capacity limitations that doom it as a long-term option for electric cars. Lithium ion batteries used in electric vehicles rely on a metal oxide or metal phosphate (typically cobalt, manganese or iron-based materials) cathode as a positive electrode, a carbon-based anode as a negative electrode and an electrolyte to conduct lithium ions from one electrode to the other. When the car is driven, the lithium ions flow from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte and separator membrane. Charging the battery reverses the direction of ion flow. The limited number of ions that can be stored in these electrodes, however, has prompted researchers to look in new directions.

"Lithium ion batteries are in many ways the best we have right now in terms of energy density, and they'll be with us for quite some time, including in electric vehicles," according to Saint Andrews chemistry professor Peter Bruce. "But we already know that if we can double the energy storage in those batteries, that's going to be the limit of what's possible. Lithium ion batteries won't meet our needs moving forward, hence the interest in looking at alternatives such as lithium?air."

In principle, lithium?air batteries would collect oxygen from the air while the vehicle is in motion. That means they would not need heavy-metal oxides that add weight to the battery yet offer limited storage. The oxygen molecules react with lithium ions and electrons on the surface of a porous gold cathode to form lithium peroxide. This lithium peroxide formation during discharge leads to an electrical current that powers the car's motor. When charging, the reverse reaction takes place?the oxygen is released back into the atmosphere.

Thus far, the cathodes and electrolytes being tested for use in lithium?air batteries decompose and degrade to the point where there is little lithium peroxide formation or only partial formation and decomposition after only a few charge?discharge cycles, Bruce says. He and Saint Andrews colleagues Zhangquan Peng, Stefan Freunberger and Yuhui Chen had been searching for a reaction at the electrode that could be repeated over many cycles.

Given the need to keep battery costs down, the Saint Andrews team suggests that instead of all-gold electrodes, one option might be to coat carbon with gold and observe whether the results are comparable.

"We've demonstrated that the electrochemical reaction that needs to take place in an air battery does work and does seem to be reversible," Bruce says. He and his team turned to gold as a possible electrode material because the metal is a stable substrate for oxygen reduction in nonaqueous (made from a liquid other than water) systems. The use of a porous gold provides voids for incorporation of the solid lithium peroxide, something not available from planar (flat, nonporous) gold. "We don't really know what it is about the nanoporous gold that seems to give us this level of stability, more work needs to be done to determine this," he acknowledges.

Lithium?air battery research is also underway at Argonne National Laboratory, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, IBM and elsewhere, so stay tuned.
