HBT: Magic's group still in running for Dodgers

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Magic Johnson-Stan Kasten group is among seven bidders left in the running to buy the Dodgers.

The field was whittled down to nine after the groups headlined by Peter O?Malley and Joe Torre dropped out over the past week. The groups led by Memphis Grizzlies? owner Michael Heisley and Tony Rossler, a minority investor in the Brewers, were eliminated today.

The remaining bidders include groups led by Johnson and veteran baseball executive Stan Kasten; Connecticut investment king Steven Cohen and longtime Los Angeles agent Arn Tellem; Stanley Gold and the family of the late Roy Disney; and New York media executive Leo Hindery in partnership with Tom Barrack, chairman of Santa Monica-based Colony Capital.

St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, Beverly Hills-based real estate developer Alan Casden and Jared Kushner, owner and publisher of the New York Observer and son-in-law of Donald Trump, also remain in contention.

The seven remaining groups will now advance to a review process by MLB, which includes voting by two committees of owners. MLB is expected to inform outgoing owner Frank McCourt which bidders have advanced by mid-to-late March. McCourt will then hold one more round of bidding before identifying a winner by April 1. He is required to close the sale by April 30.

Shaikin notes that the Dodgers are expected to sell for more than $1.5 billion, which would establish a new record sale price for an American sports franchise.

NASHVILLE (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Monday slammed rival Rick Santorum as a "big labor Republican," accusing him of siding with unions over Memphis-based FedEx when the Senate grappled with a labor dispute in the 1990s.

Gingrich, the former Georgia congressman and House Speaker, is hoping to revive his struggling campaign in the South, and he tailored his message Monday to Republican voters in Tennessee. Although polls show a close race between Santorum and Mitt Romney, Gingrich challenged the former Pennsylvania senator and his conservative credentials.

"I think there are profound reasons that Rick lost the Senate race by the largest margin in Pennsylvania history in 2006 and I think it's very hard for him to carry that all the way to the general," Gingrich said. "Then he comes South and you take the case right here. He voted for the unions over FedEx. I suspect most folks in the state don't know that. But in fact he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania and I suspect when you get to Memphis and you say to people, 'Gee, this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx give into the unions.' Santorum won't be as popular the following morning."

Gingrich was referring to a provision in a 1996 spending bill for the Federal Aviation Administration that sought to help FedEx truck drivers in their efforts to organize. A group of Democrats held up the FAA bill to protest what they said was an attempt to help FedEx prevent its truck drivers from forming a union.

In 2006, Democrat Bob Casey soundly defeated then Sen. Santorum.

Gingrich said if Romney wins the Michigan primary on Tuesday, "you'll see things start to clarify. If, as people expect, you end up with a Romney victory in Michigan tomorrow, I think you'll see Santorum getting a very different second look."

Bypassing Michigan and Arizona, the other primary on Tuesday, Gingrich said voters in Tennessee and his home state of Georgia could rejuvenate his presidential bid, which has stalled since he claimed a surprise victory in last month's South Carolina primary. The former House speaker said a handful of states voting on the mega-contest day of March 6 could propel him to wins in Mississippi and Alabama next month and delegate-rich primaries later in the spring in Texas and California.

"Then all of the sudden, the same media which said I was dead in the fall, I was ahead in December, I was dead in early January, I was ahead in mid-January, all of the sudden they're going to say ... Gingrich will be back again," he said during a luncheon with local Republicans.

Tennessee and Georgia hold nearly one-third of the 419 delegates at stake in the 10 states voting on Super Tuesday, contests Gingrich views as crucial to his struggling presidential bid. His campaign sees a potential backdoor opening if either Romney or Santorum stumbles, setting the stage for another showdown in a prolonged series of primary contests.

At a rally on the grounds of the State Capitol, Gingrich, a former history professor, said President Andrew Jackson would have been "enraged" by Obama, citing the president's recent decision to apologize for the actions of U.S. troops who burned Qurans while destroying documents on a military base in Afghanistan.

"Jackson understood that you want your opponents to respect you," Gingrich said, overlooking a statue of the 19th century president riding horseback. "They don't have to like you but they have to understand that you're formidable and you're dangerous."

Later in the day, Gingrich was attending a rally at the State Capitol with former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson.

Gingrich was reaching for a strong showing in Tennessee even as a statewide poll underscored his challenges here. A Vanderbilt University poll showed Gingrich at 10 percent in the state, trailing rivals Santorum with 33 percent and Romney with 17 percent. The poll of 767 likely Republican primary voters was conducted Feb. 16-22 and had a margin of error of 3 percent.

"The race remains very fluid in this state and will likely continue to move in response to the primaries in Michigan and Arizona," said John Geer, a Vanderbilt political scientist and co-director of the Vanderbilt Poll. "Still, this poll suggests the climb is steep for the speaker, but far from impossible in this unpredictable year."

Earlier, Gingrich attended a health care forum at the law firm of former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker Jr., R-Tenn., urging Republicans to think of this time as "the beginning of the replacement debate rather than just the anti-Obama care debate." Gingrich has said he would repeal President Barack Obama's health care law if Republicans win congressional majorities.

Gingrich has offered a number of alternatives to the new health law, offering a tax credit to help people buy health insurance or the ability to deduct part of the costs from their taxes.

The former speaker returns to Georgia on Tuesday for a three-day bus tour around his home state, hoping to halt a month-long slide.

"My basic hope is to pick up some delegates virtually everywhere, pick up a lot of delegates in the South and Southwest and then with Texas and California, be totally in the race," Gingrich said.

The problem I'm having is this:

When I try to map the network drive, it won't let me merely connect to it. So, I have to click map network drive on the XP computer and hit "login with other credentials" and enter the username/pass for the user account on the Win 7 machine (we'll say Bob for user and Smith for password for the sake of example). It will mount the share (which is actually the C:\ root of the drive) just fine.

The only problem is the moment you restart the Windows XP system, it will lose the connection. My fix for it was to create a .bat file that contained the following:

net use S: /delete

net use S: \\Server1Win7\server1win7 Smith /USER:\Bob /PERSISTENT:YES

net use T: /delete

net use T: \\Server2Win7\server2win7 Smith /USER:\Bob /PERSISTENT:YES

Plus, sometimes it doesn't map the drive correctly (I assume because the batch file is running before the connection has a chance to initialize on the LAN).

Any help would be much appreciated, as I am completely at a loss here. Any solution that would allow me to map the network share for both of them and it remain persistent would be wonderful.

PS - I've also tried adding an "Everybody" user to the permissions on the Win 7 systems with full access, but it only seemed to cause problems with the existing connections.

It might also be prudent to mention that both the Windows 7 and Windows XP systems are all 32 bit. I've also disabled the firewalls on the two Windows 7 systems. Neither of them have any antivirus or security software installed.

" 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2' trailer will debut exclusively on every 'Hunger Games' print on its opening night for what will be Lionsgate's largest release ever," Lionsgate chief executive Jon Feltheimer said (via the Los Angeles Times) in a conference call Friday (February 10).

Lionsgate acquired Summit Entertainment, the production company for "Twilight," in January. The hope appears to be that excitement over the "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer will draw even more people in to see the already much-anticipated "Hunger Games," which, with its $100 million production budget and three planned sequels, is the biggest investment in Lionsgate's history.

Fans of Suzanne Collins' bestselling YA trilogy are counting the days until the release of the first Jennifer Lawrence-starring film, though its stars are trying to avoid all the pre-release buzz. "It was crazy. It had so much buildup for something I've done so many times before," Josh Hutcherson recently told MTV News. "Every other time it's been, 'Oh, another movie.' This time, it had so much going on before the production even started."

"Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" hits theaters on November 16.

Each and every day new and improved gadgets are being introduced to the market. New computers with copious amounts of memory constantly line the computer stores, whilst mobile phones are released that allow for full length videos to be played effortlessly. Ten months in production, Slack successfully created the Amphibious Lounger which is, in effect, a large beanbag that can float on water.

A standard bean bag on the poolside, the Lounger works in the pool by letting in water through the specially designed material, which then reacts with the contents, producing hundreds of inflatable ?beans?.

Solar Shower ? due to chlorine being a corrosive chemical, many people cannot use swimming pools that use chlorine for substantial lengths of time without showering in between uses.

To make things easier, rather than having to continually walk indoors to shower, there have been a range of solar panel outdoor showers produced that when attached to a clean water supply, will produce warm water for showering under without any need for connection to an electrical socket. Furthermore, the majority of solar showers created are designed to also be used when camping or traveling and are therefore extremely light weight, telescopic and very easy to carry around.

Oasis Insta-Pool ? it is well known that for a permanent swimming pool, the cost can easily reach $ 45,000. As a lot of people simply do not have the space, or only believe they will use the swimming pool for a few weeks each year, then the Insta-Pool could be a good solution.

The pool is more than 12 feet long, takes only moments to set up and take down. It comes with a filter, ladder, ground cover and pool cover, making for one of the most affordable swimming pools on the market today.

Nonlethal self defense items have been around one and one form or another for generations. Pepper sprays got their start in the 1300?s when the Chinese started throwing bags of hot spices at their enemies. They?ve come along way since then, of course. Stun guns were invented in the early 1900?s when a farmer needed a way to get his cattle moving a little bit more efficiently so he invented a cattle prod. Stun guns have come a long way since then.

Of course there are many other reasons to choose a nonlethal alternative. But these products have become extremely successful in the last decade.

They developed a tremendous track record with military and law enforcement use. Next time you see a police officer look at his utility belt or ask him why he carries a pepper spray and some kind of stun device. He?ll tell you that they?re very effective in subduing criminals without resorting to deadly force.

They?re basically three categories of self defense items. They are:

1. Stun devices-usually we think of stun guns. Stun guns interrupt the neuro-muscular system for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. A 3 to 5 second application causes the body to over work very rapidly similar to running a marathon. It depletes the body of all blood sugars so there?s no energy left. Tasers work by shooting out two electrified barbs that when they hit the target overrides the central nervous system providing incredible take down power-greater than a 9 mm handgun. They have almost 100 percent stopping power.

2. Defensive sprays-also known as pepper sprays. They use a derivative of cayenne pepper, which is one of the hottest in the world known as oleoresin capsicum or OC for short. It can be delivered in the form of a mist, foam or gel. The range is up to as much as 25 feet for a pepper gun but usually in the 8 to 10 foot range. A spray in the face of OC spray causes choking, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and swells the veins of the eyes causing the eyes to close. And oh yeah how about some pain. Lots of it.

3. Personal alarms-are really defensive noisemakers. They are very effective in a variety of situations. When you?re under attack or feel threatened in a remote location a blast of a 125 dB personal alarm will draw attention to your situation from nearby citizens and will frighten most assailants away. These are the perfect self defense products for women.

When are you getting some?

If you are in the market for a self defense product look for quality, effectiveness, and a biggie-LEGALITY. Stun guns are not legal in some states. Check with your local police department first before you get one.
